Lumigraph is an Irish artist whose releases have been few but calculated since his first EP, a split release on (what was then) a digital-only Dublin label called First Second in 2012. Since then he's put out a record on Mister Saturday Night, a tape on Opal Tapes, and has appeared on compilations and split releases from Where To Now?, Farbwechsel (as Black Mold with Max Ravitz, aka Patricia) and MMODEMM, to name a few. His latest release comes on Major Problems, who have steadily been making a name for themselves as a powerhouse of Irish electronic music. Entitled Bulletproof Holiday, it showcases Lumigraph's powerful, discordant approach, which is laced with mutant energy and club-ready panache. "The Power Broker" is an uptempo number with a simple riff at daring intervals, a rare beast that is both hard and gentle. "Garbage 4 Garbage" is all hard though, a rough and abrasive track that stomps and parades around with undeniable swagger. The title track, which closes the release, is relatively restrained by the standards of its compatriots, a slow-build with just as much mechanical crunch but in more steady fashion, less wild and reckless, approaching but never reaching free abandon. "Spectacular Times", though, which we can premiere for you today, is a heavyweight among equals. Percussion that just snaps, enormous synth motifs, indescribable sounds somewhere between drums and synths that keep the track hurtling forth with power that seems to come from some extra-terrestrial being, it leaves one at once invigorated and utterly worn out.

Moving on from their time holed up in a leisure resort relic, the Dutch retrogressive, analogue synth machine obsessives and tape fanatics Betonkust & Palmbomen II have teamed up together once more for a new EP. An immediate follow up to their debut LP Center Parcs, the new EP pays fictional homage to a now deceased famous TV star, who instead on working on the screen, took up a new direction in making music. Once more replete with esoteric experimentalism, analogue jams, drums machines, synths, and a healthy dose of acid basslines, the production duo advance upon their aesthetic with a new extended EP of nostalgic, melancholic electro.

With Palmbomen II a.k.a. Kai Hugo, based out and working in Los Angeles, collaborations with Dutch-based partner Betonkust happen less frequently than they should - especially when you acknowledge that they do not use, or record to computers. When they do happen though, their distinctive sonic palette of saturated distortion, and warm melodic wavey house shines through. This time recorded in a bungle somewhere in the Dutch countryside, the two producers have created a concept record about Bart, a local hero and his imagined life in a parallel universe. In this reality, instead of making it in TV, Bart is a successful music producer, the track titles detailing his journey through this new and imagined life. 'Bart Is Alone Again' kicks off the record with its wistful melodies, and harmonic leads, before 'Underground Dance Floor' kicks in with its predominate bassline, and squelching deep-rooted, undercurrents of hardcore. Along Bart’s odyssey there are moments for 'Bart's Jam', an early days Warp Records / Detroit belter; 'Rejected Demo Tape' a downbeat moment of anguish; ending with 'A Series of Bad Decisions,' in which the EP plays out to somber, yet harmonious conclusion.

A few months in and TAU, the label helmed by Adana Twins, is in the groove. Launched in August 2018, the outlet has given the Hamburg duo a chance to flex their A&R muscles, curating releases that showcase more established artists alongside up and coming talents, while allowing them to fully explore their own tastes.
TAU004 shines a light on Amberoom, a German trio comprised Manuel Tur, Adrian Hoffmann and Ramin Nouyan. The three men produce won- derfully warm, soulful, nourishing compositions which have already court favour with the Innervisions crew - their killer track ‘Kastell’ released on the much-respected ‘Secret Weapons 11’ compilation, and Dixon added his own “Retouch”. Veteran producer isolée steps up for remix duties on this one, too, making this an essential three-tracker.
The EP kicks off with ‘Tulu’ a stirring cut punctuated by a wistful male vocal complemented by a harmonious, yet sombre low end. Delicate twin- kles and emotive strings add depth as the track tugs on your heartstrings. This is a lush, measured composition with excellent programming on its organic-sounding drums and a contemplative atmosphere throughout.
Next up is the title track, ‘Jazire’, which picks up the pace immediately. A contagious 4x4 beat forms the foundation of this rousing number, which builds steadily into a cacophony of tribal-esque effects; shakers reverberating next to mysterious sounds that echo in and out of the back- ground. A melancholy melody gives this track extra emotional density, while the tension builds and subsides intermittently and the beat keeps those hips moving.
Lastly, isolée’s reinterpretation of the title track utilises a more traditional house motif, emphasising the shadowy atmospherics and injecting a more insistent beat. As the 4x4 rhythm pumps along, he adds clicks and skipping toms - pushing the energy levels up a notch. A dark, eerie tone pervades and isolée retains the sorrowful refrain from the original to complement his dour synth riff.
Adana Twins keep the standards high as TAU continues to impress with another exemplary release.

Side A "Your Love" is a soulful midtempo disco groover, and it became DJ Supermarkt’s most played and most successful club-track in 2018.
Side B is an even slower Soul-Affair, with a great production and feel.
Now it finally gets its official release that it deserves!
