With my Rhythm Control mix I wanted to explore a slightly different sound than what people know me for in clubs, and create something that sounds timeless. I've drawn inspiration from different places in time and different styles, and I saw this as a way for me to collect into one place all of those more eclectic influences that continue to inspire me. Most of all this is a mix of slow jams and indie rock to bring some heat in on those cold cold winter nights.

By complete coincidence, a week and a half ago, Pharrell Williams and Scott Vener asked me to record a 10 minute French Rap mix for their Beats1 radio show, OTHERtone. Their guest was going to be the artist JR, and I guess they wanted to highlight various aspects of French culture. I'm French Canadian, not exactly the same thing, but I know the music and I love an opportunity to do a themed mix, so I did it. 

After last Friday's events, I look at this mix in a whole different light, because it brings back memories of moments shared with my Parisian friends over the years. I tried to put together some highlights of the genre, ranging from 90s hardcore to the current wave. 

There is a term that denotes all the countries that speak French: la francophonie. It's more than language, it's a shared culture. Canada and France are connected by la francophonie. So is Switzerland, the native country of my friend Kimou Meyer who created the artwork for this mix. I want to send a big "dédicace" (shout out) to Kimou, to my friends Matthieu Couturier and Guillaume Berg who helped me brush up on recent jams, and as with everything France-related and DJ-related, to the memory of DJ Mehdi. One love.

Une énième tape de french boogie… eh ouais mais celle-ci c'est la mienne...
La France Fonk vient d'une époque d'une vacuité totale, elle puait l'oseille et les soucis étaient encore bien loin.
Tapie exhortait à réussir sa vie, tandis que Bouygues bétonnait tranquille ce qu'il y avait de betonnable. 
Tantôt stupide, tantôt arrogante, la France Fonk dégeule le fric et quand la crise pointe le bout de son nez, elle se sniffe allègrement l'héroïne chic dans les folles nuits coquines.
 
Ça drague sec, son ambassadrice, et accessoirement  fantasme ultime, s'appelle Muriel Moreno. 
La musique n'était pas en reste, mièvre à souhait, à l'égocentrisme poussé à son extrême, elle s'accompagne avec légéreté  d'une bonne grosse funk à basse bien grasses  comme on l'aime. 

Elle connait les sales histoires, les black mic mac, les raconte à merveille, sa femme s'appelle revient, et pour cent brique elle a plus rien mais si elle sent qu'elle va craquer, elle appelle Pinot simple flic.
Entre jeux de mot pourris et humour de merde, ça sonnait grave, France Fonk était surtout très bien produite. 
Parce derrière c'était pas des rigolpinces, Pezin, Schulteiss, Malia, Wisniak, Borowski…autant de tueurs à gages qui se sont laissés tenter le fonk.
Un brin de legereté ça fait pas de mal par les temps qui courent.
100% ringardos et maxi classe!

France Fonk

Copenhagen based Music For Dreams are proud to unleash the debut album of Swedens Prins Emanuel.

The first full length solo album of Prins Emanuel is a concept album revolving around the medium of the vinyl record itself. With a functionalists attitude, its two sides can serve two different purposes. Translated from Swedish, the album title reads "Work/Leisure Time": which are the moods the two sides are meant to reflect. 
So on an early friday evening, you might tell your girl or boy to put on the A/B -side, as you're getting ready to bust some moves that night. And on sunday evening, you tell him/her to put on the C/D-side as you're tapping up a bath.  
Although this is a multi-instrumentalists vision, the fact that the Prins is mainly a drummer is surely evident in the masterfully hypnotic grooves that form the ground on which the whole album stands on. 
And while elements of dub, boogie, afro, house and new age flicker by as we ride along on these motorik rhythms, the balance between warmth and repetition is always a tickling tension.  
For fans of the young Swedes former output with the Fasaan/Chalice label (especially his collaborations with label mate Golden Ivy) this will surely not disappoint.

Earlier this month Elyte and Cnyce’s interstellar Soul Clap ship descended on Jæger with the full force of Sun Ra’s most cosmic determination. Holled up in our basement the entire night, they brought the might of a Bootsy Collins platform down on Oslo, with their Funk-determined vision of an electronic future narrated by Mad Max.
Captivating and energetic, their set skated through dance music from the 70’s to the present on a celestial trajectory where no man has ventured before, their destination set to mark the release of their latest- and second album, “Soul Clap”. Like “EFUNK” before it this latest album is a highly intoxicating punchbowl of musical influences concocted from the group’s most primal experiences on the dance floor, distilled for your most hedonistic listening pleasures.
Tracing a line from their Funk roots, with syncopated, bouncing live drums, oozing cool bass-lines, and vocals that call out at you from some foggy hazy corned of a dance floor like a siren song, Soul Clap is undeniably a soul Clap album from cover to cover, while at the same time plotting perhaps a new orbit for the Soul Clap ship.
