Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built. Stylistically, techno is generally repetitive instrumental music, oftentimes produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked with a bass drum on each quarter note pulse, a backbeat played by snare or clap on the second and fourth pulses of the bar, and an open hi-hat sounding every second eighth note. The tempo tends to vary between approximately 120 to 150 beats per minute (bpm), depending on the style of techno. As the original sound evolved in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it also diverged to such an extent that a wide spectrum of stylistically distinct music was being referred to as techno. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the original techno sound had garnered a large underground following in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The growth of techno's popularity in Europe between 1988 and 1992 was largely due to the emergence of the rave scene and a thriving club culture. By 1994 there were a number of techno producers in the UK and Europe building on the Detroit sound, but a growing range of underground dance music styles were by then vying for attention. Some drew upon the Detroit techno aesthetic, while others fused components of preceding dance music forms. This led to the appearance (in the UK initially) of inventive new music, some of which bore little, if any, relation to the original techno sound.  Producers from Detroit, frustrated by the lack of opportunity in their home country, looked to Europe for their future livelihood. This first wave of Detroit expatriates was soon joined by a number of up-and-coming artists, the so-called "second wave". Developments in American-produced techno between 1990 and 1992 fueled the expansion and eventual divergence of techno in Europe. Although eclipsed by Germany, Belgium was another focus of second-wave techno in this time period. The Ghent-based label R&S Records embraced harder-edged techno by "teenage prodigies" like Beltram and C.J. Bolland, releasing "tough, metallic tracks... with harsh, discordant synth lines.

The epic productions from Full Intention just keep rolling. Following up on their last production on Defected, ‘Keeping Pushing’, which climbed to #1 in the Traxsource chart as well as a remix on the recent Fourth Floor re-release Black Riot ‘A Day In The Life’, Michael Gray and Jon Pearn can do no wrong. 

Originally released in 2001 on Defected, ‘Love Is Not A Game’ by J Majik now gets the Full Intention treatment, alongside a rare drum and bass diversion from Defected by Mr Majik himself. The undeniable strengths of the original ‘Love Is Not A Game’ shine through in these remixes while its basic core elements have been turned on their head. Kathy Brown’s commanding voice soars while the original minimal drum and bass bottom line is switched up for a classic Full Intention house-inclined 4/4. On the flip side is J Majik with his stripped-back drum and bass version, which has all the same pace from his Metalheadz days and a suitably souped-up, rolling bassline.

Conceived along the space of a few years and part of a big collection of unfinished experiments stored on cassette tapes, this eight tracks selection well represents Fred Ventura's late 80s and early 90s infatuation with Chicago House, Detroit Techno, early Warp records and even a secret passion for EBM. Using a basic set up made of Roland Juno 106, Roland JX-8p, Oberheim DX, Roland TR909 and an Akai sampler, these tracks were never officially mixed and meant to be released until today. Minimal and hypnotic, dry and direct, both sides of the record show an instinctive approach to rhythms and basslines, typical of those days where computer didn't have a predominant role in the creative process. 
One of the Italian electronic music's best-kept secrets. Tip!!!
