This song took longer to finish than I thought when I started. It is difficult to get the frequencies right so that all the sounds don't flow together into a mush. A good sound engineer knows the tricks we amateurs tear our hair out over.

Then She Reaches for the Gun was formed in 2021 by Mat Ward. At its essence is sound collage, experimentation and the desire to merge and defy genres. Ward invites musicians, sound artists, poets and anyone interested to send him files to be used, abused and showcased ‘as suggested by the work’. They are not always musical but field recordings, spoken word, engine noises and drunken rants. Animals participate a lot too! The raw material is arranged one phrase asks for the next in an alchemical and intuitive process that will most often feature dozens of tracks weaving in and out of each other, colliding, harmonising, arguing and laughing along the way.

Both the aesthetic and the compositional methods use what Frank Zappa called Xenochrony - the mixing together of separately recorded and rhythmically opposing musical phrases to create polyrhythmic and polytempi compositions.The work also features fragmented story telling with the human voice (in many languages) appearing unannounced throughout the tracks offering up snippets of thoughts, conversations, jokes and existential angst. The absurdity of humanities desperate claim to have any real understanding of its place in the universe is revealed through the recorded follies and genuine emotions of the participants in these works. The project is a celebration of experimentation, chance, diversity and community. It pays homage to all musical tastes and genres whilst maintaining a sense of humour and irreverence that is needed to stay sane in the climate of early 21st Century contemporary culture.

Let me start with an apology to all french speaking listeners! I don't speak french and just translated English sentences based on French words that rhyme.

The song is a pastiche (French word!) on the New romantic band Visage.
It was the result of testing the new VST plugin “paralogy64” from Full Bucket Music, “           simulating the paraphonic Crumar Trilogy and Stratus keyboards from the early 1980s”.

Alone in the Crowd

A little rough but this was one of my favorite tracks to do this year and felt like a good last track of 2025. Very much inspired by the music I listened to during my last term at law school (Interpol, The Killers, Bloc Party), which was a unique time when everything was ending but other things were beginning. 

Also did this one as a way to start diving into a Korg Multi/Poly synth, which is a synth I have wanted for a very long time. That synth is all over this one, though there are some plug-ins, too (I believe aside from drums, they are just Sytrus and Amplitube). If I were to do this again, would've tracked the bass on a fender jazz, but I used an Ibanez I like very much because it reminds me of my first bass in high school.
