Wormfood are proud to present a full EP of remixes of the Abobo Nation Part EP by UK afro electronic pioneers Afriquoi.

We’ve drawn on a wide range of the freshest names in the emerging afro electronic scene, including The Busy Twist (Soundway), LV (Keysound/Brownswood/Hyperdub), Octa Push (Soul Jazz/ Steakhouse/ Enchufada), Wonky Logic (Boom Better) and Ranga.


1. The EP opens with UK afro bass wonderkids The Busy Twist and their full power treatment of Carnabala. Already something of a dancefloor classic + with strong support from Radio 1 Xtra’s Mistajam,  they’ve made it bassier, heavier, and even more danceable, with new vocals from Zongo Abongo straight out of Ghana, adding to the original vocals from K.O.G. Zongo Central!

2. Fresh from releasing their incredible Lingua album, Portugese duo Octa Push bring their own Lusocentric take on bashment, grime, kaduro + UK funky known as ‘afro tuga’ –  giving a catchy, rolling new treatment to the vocals of Nigerian Adedeji Adetayo.

3. Liverpool’s Ranga’s take on To Na Musu is a deep, explorative  meditation on afro house reminiscent of the best of Boddhi Satva and Henrik Schwartz, bringing the kora more to the forefront and adding some spoken word from Afriquoi kora player + vocalist Jally Kebba Susso, explaining that the song is a tribute to the women of the world. What a smoothy….

4. South London’s LV need no introduction to any fans of forward thinking afro dance music, holding the space since 2007 with a host of amazing releases including the seminal ‘Boomslang’ with South Africa’s Okmalumkoolkat, their Routes album on Keysound with Joshua Idehen, Sebenza album on Hyperdub and their collaborations with Spoek Mathambo and latest album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood. Here they bring a shuffly, uptempo and slightly menacing treatment to the uplifting vocals of Kenya’s Maia von Lekow. Get it on loud!

5. Finishing off the EP is a low slung, brooding treatment of TOYK, adding original thumb piano, crushing synths and wonky, staggering beats to Jago’s rowdy dancehall vocals, showing why he is fast developing a name for himself as one of the most exciting artist in the burgeoning global leftfield hiphop scene.

Daniel Haaksman ́s remixes have been a fixture in the global club scene for years, offering up a hard-to-define blend of Brazilian and Afro sounds mixed with various club genres. “Remixes 2008-2017” shows Daniel Haaksman ́s eclectic sound melded into a more club-friendly format with eleven remixes for artists such as Schlachthofbronx, Batuk, Felipe Cordeiro, Omulu and Populous amongst others, most of which were released over the past nine years.


The compilation “Remixes 2008-2017” now anthologises Daniel Haaksman ́s best remixes, covering his finest remixes from 2007 up to 2017. The compilation displays his preference for remixing a diverse range of artists from around the world, including Germany ́s Schlachthofbronx, South Africa ́s Batuk or Weird Together from New Zealand. The opener, a remix for Brazilian Nordestino star Felipe Cordeiro kicks off with a hip shaking, dembow inspired beat. Colombia ́s Makine Del Karibe gets reworked in a tropical house fashion, the Brazilian-French collaboration of Omulu + King Doudou receives a trap inspired treatment. The compilation excels when it showcases Daniel Haaksman ́s knack for transforming the original onto a club ready rework withouth losing the original ́s essence and identity. “Loco” for example by Cuban outfit Madera Limpia is remixed into a dancefloor bomb, deftly layering synths and percussions on a thundering beat. Other highlights include his recent remix for Italian up and commer, Populous as well as Montreal- Moçambican singer Samito.

Creating a great remix is a delicate process, one that requires a relationship to the original, yet also a certain forcefulness in order to create a new production, rather than merely adding another beat to an acappella or melody. Over the last decade, Daniel Haaksman has displayed exactly this balance of reverence and confidence, creating his own sound in using the groundwork of others to build upon. This compilation presents Haaksman ́s capacity to produce remixes that sound today as fresh as they did when they were originally released.

The Jolly Ambulances: "Afro-Colombian Funeral Music" 

"The Art of Ancestor Mourning in San Basilio de Palenque" 

"Today, the 10th of May 2000, we are here in San Basilio de Palenque. Palenque de San Basilio, the first freed village in America, a small piece of Africa in Colombia…" Victor Cimarra walks on the village streets with his machete in his hand; he has just come back from the mountain where he spent his morning sowing manioc, rice and plantains. Behind him lays his native village, the symbol of 500 years of history, and of the fierce struggle of the nègres marrons1 against slavery and the colonial order.

"Today we shall record the first album by the 'Jolly Ambulances', the Palenque mourners and legendary rum drinkers who sing at funeral wakes and honour the memory of our ancestors. Without them, there can be no proper funeral in Palenque. 

'The Jolly Ambulances' are the representatives par excellence of ancestral Palenque music (other bands in the village, such as the Sexteto, have integrated more modern rhythms). They belong to the Cabildo Lumbalú, which has existed since colonial times and which gathers the village elders into a kind of brotherhood in charge of burials and everything related to the cult of the dead in Palenque. The Cabildo is the direct descendant of the state that ruled the life of the Palenquero maroons. It was a warrior state, a society aiming to resist the colonial order. Each time a villager dies, the family of the deceased calls for the Jolly Ambulances to perform during the funeral wake, which must last nine days and nights. 

Graciela Salgado is the bandleader because she belongs to the family of the 'natural' Cabildo leaders: the Salgado Valdez, better known as 'Batata', a dynasty of drummers famous throughout the region. "We have named this band 'The Jolly Ambulances' because we are jolly old women, we drink rum and sing and liven up funeral wakes. It is the art of mourning the dead to please our ancestors", says Graciela.

The mourners drink their bottle of Ñeque rum and start to sing in their deep, sad voices, so that the Africa fills the bush again with songs which could well be the laments of the slaves during their sea-crossing on the slave boats. "The first music in the world was that of the Jolly Ambulances, the true African bullerenge", says Jose de la Cruz Valdez. Next to him, a huge sound system plays African music, some very loud soukous. Times have changed but the musicians of the Jolly Ambulances have retained their music, which hasn't aged a bit.

In a small beaten-earth house, the mobile studio has already been set up. Pets make their way through mike cables and everyone drinks Ñeque rum because the old mourners cannot sing without rum! 



1 Macaco Mata el Toro - Chalupa 

Graciela starts to sing: "I haven't eaten for three days/ I haven't drunk water for four days aehhh / they are coming down the mountain, they go and fetch water / Goodbye Macaco, Macaquito / Farewell Macaco / take it by the tail aehh / ah that bull is courageous!!" 
"Macaco was a small fish. This piece was written by my mother, La Lu Valdez. She had a beautiful voice, like the sound of a clarinet. She would have a few drinks and start inventing songs. I have never heard anyone sing the bullerengue like her, ever. La Lu Valdez!! She would go to Cartagena every week to sell sweets and fruit to the tourists. For days she would walk with a tray on her head. Then she would come back with many songs that she had learnt or composed." 
This piece was taken up by my brother, Paulino Salgado "Batata", with a real band. The day I saw him on stage, I was so moved that I cried (CD LC6759: Batata y su Rumba Palenquera" Network).
