We are delighted to welcome one of our all-time favourite Norwegian producers to the Phonica Mix Series - Bård Aasen Lødemel aka Skatebård. Dating back to the early 2000s, Skatebård's predominantly house and techno-focused productions have been picked up and released by such labels as Sex Tags Mania, Bordello A Parigi, Full Pupp, Untz Untz, Live At Robert Johnson and, of course, his own Digitalo Enterprises imprint. Antal & Hunee - Welcome To Our World - Part 2

I recorded a mix for Mr. Tong's "Essential Mix" radioshow and it will be sent straight into the heart of your ears this Saturday! 👂🏻👂🏼👂🏽👂🏾👂🏿

Really happy to say at least a third of the mix consists of music made or released by friends - a constant inspiration in my life! ❤️

I also wanted to give a bit of context, as I had two inspirations for this mix:

1. The beginning of an Auden poem called "On This Island" 🏝

"Look, stranger, at this island now
The leaping light for your delight discovers,
Stand stable here
And silent be,
That through the channels of the ear
May wander like a river
The swaying sound of the sea." 🌊

2. The mix starts with a song called "White Bird" by June11 and there is a beautiful background story to the song, that stayed with my during all the dreaming i was doing during the recording. 🕊

"White Bird was inspired by the story of the biplane L'Oiseau Blanc, that took off from Paris in 1927 and vanished on its way to New York. The pilots, Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli, were never seen again. Their PL.8-01 sea plane, made of wood and cloth, is thought to have broken upon landing. Nobody knows what really happened. I think L'Oiseau Blanc is still floating somewhere in the endless sky, with its ghosts, doing aerobatics. Maybe their plan was to have no plan, but to gracefully get away from darkness, time, madness, crowds." 🕊

Flexing his vinyl collection and demonstrating his passion for all styles of house, he played a set that took the dancefloor on a journey across time and space flush with groovy disco vibes transitioning into banging house gems. Born and raised in Amsterdam and with his roots in Japan, Masalo (@masalo-music) is an artist who is firmly at the heart of the city’s music scene. He’s active in numerous ways, though his focus lies solidly on DJing and producing, in which he has been turning heads with his open minded approach that takes in music that brims with vitality. The Brighter Days party he runs with Kamma is famously colourful and friendly, like the man himself, and his choice productions have found their home on the Rush Hour label, the imprint he’s closely connected with.

For this week’s mix he takes us on a two hour journey to a better place with an electrifying selection of organic dance jams, new wave, spiritual house and big hearted disco that will have you in a spin. The mixing is superbly tight given that the tunes jump around so freely from the old to the new, and it all adds up to a huge injection of escapist positivity that we all need in our lives right now.
