Olivia Meek is a Canadian producer who, perhaps contrary to your preconceived notions, has been steadily releasing music since the beginning of this decade. With her Regularfantasy project, Meek has been dialing in a potent blend of hypnagogic vocal house for years, even if she has only just begun to acquire the kind of wider support and gigging opportunities that, in this industry, are often reserved for each week’s “hot new thing”. 

Though opportunities have indeed seemed to follow her in the wake of 2018’s Sublets and Sunsets, Meek has stayed true to a signature style since at least 2013’s Slow Release—a release born of a time when many now-dormant 100% Silk artists were receiving more acclaim for similarly flavored work. 

Her recent work, like the rest of her catalog, shows a fluidity of approach often present in the work of close friend D. Tiffany, but her singing is what really separates her from her peers—in a “genre” often geared toward texture and vibe, Meek has continued to frequently deploy her voice as the focal point of her idiosyncratic sound. Meek spoke with us about her evolving approach to track-craft, her relationship with VST’s, and the the creative value of rice cakes in a frank, sincere interview featured below.

A move from her birthplace of Kiev to Chicago, where she grew up, gave DJ and producer Alinka her first taste of house music. Getting her early education from radio shows like Sonic Boom and tracks from local heroes like Cajmere and DJ Funk, she soon became completely engrossed in the dance music scene, leading her to start DJing herself and begin taking on odd jobs at local parties in the city. 

In 2001 she was invited by Justin Long to be a resident at his .Dotbleep party at the legendary Smartbar, where she went on to hold a residency for a decade. Her movements in production came after following a chance meeting with Hercules vs Love Affair vocalist Shaun J. Wright, now her best friend, which led to the pair launching their record label and party Twirl. This would become a home for a lengthy string of collaborative releases, as well as several records via the likes of Crosstown Rebels and Classic. 

Earlier this year, from her now homebase of Berlin, Alinka launched a new label called Fantasy Life with an inaugural EP of infectious house cuts; a solid pre-cursor for what's to come next on the imprint.
