We are delighted to welcome one of our all-time favourite Norwegian producers to the Phonica Mix Series - Bård Aasen Lødemel aka Skatebård. Dating back to the early 2000s, Skatebård's predominantly house and techno-focused productions have been picked up and released by such labels as Sex Tags Mania, Bordello A Parigi, Full Pupp, Untz Untz, Live At Robert Johnson and, of course, his own Digitalo Enterprises imprint. Coming in at almost 2-hours long, Bård's roof-raising mix recording is a deep dive into the more cosmic and energetic shades of house, techno and Italo, with tracks coming from Juri Hulkkonen, Lauer, DJ Blasy, Huey Mnemonic, Helium, Cybertrax and more. Head on over to offtherecord.net where you will find an in-depth interview with the main man himself, as well as a full tracklist. As we celebrate our birthday this month, it seemed fitting to invite one of our beloved family members to kick off the first APECAST of 2022. 

Westy has stood as an Ape-X resident for just over 5 years now and has become a permanent fixture in the North-East dance community. We took a few minutes to chat with him about his early experiences of Ape-X, hip-house and what it means to be a resident DJ. Check it via our Instagram 

Over the last 5 years, we have watched the Durham-born talent develop his skills to conduct dance-floors and build atmospheres. Westy possesses an unteachable secret of DJing, which is the ability to inject his spirited personality behind the decks and project it onto any dancefloor. 

After picking up decks at the young age of 13, it explains how he has accumulated such a vast record collection. Taking influences from Afrobeat, hip hop, french house and Detroit techno, it’s sometimes hard to predict what Westy will spin. After supporting the likes of Anna Wall, Kornél Kovács, Mall Grab and Archie Hamilton. The young DJ stands as one of the finest in the North East.

Presented here for your pleasure & consideration, a live set recorded in mine homestead on the 20th April 2016.

It's been recorded live in one take, & there are no edits, tidyings up, or nefarious trickery of any sort whatever, as I figured this would be disingenuous cheating of the highest order on my part.

As such (like all of my live sets) it's quite the shambles; & is replete with bum notes, incorrectly triggered patterns that mess everything up, wanton biddly noises that sound awful, accidental chords that are in the wrong key, out of tune foolishness, weak & boring bits, & moments of joy where it all fits together & everything goes invisible & disappears.

The music here then (much like its composer) is an imperfect shambles. However, while replete with error, it is lovingly & wholeheartedly wrought - as should all our efforts be.  Huzzah to it then, & to us likewise.

Onward, onward! Onward, ever upward!

He curates a sound heavily inspired by the classic US house scene; warm basses, deep pads and a love for diva vocals. Having just recently signed with one of the finest underground labels, expect a debut vinyl EP to be dropping soon.

Charch is a Georgian DJ/Producer who started his career in 2012 in Tbilisi, when the first release on Kore Music Records was out namely "Nicolas Beat" the produced sound could be specified with more deep house genre. 

After 4 year break in 2016 year he moved to Tallinn/Estonia and started Production again with solid bases of old-school house/techno classic sounds 303, 808, 909... He continues to be a selector of contemporary and classic vinyl records.

He is also a co-founder of House/Techno event series Dilation, which aims to bring and share Tbilisi underground rave culture to Baltic cities.
