Growing with each 808 layer, the passionate and insanely demanding vox lead to a break where the funk gets flavour and the place gets smashed up royal. Wobbly skewed kewl.

PREMIERE: Maya Danon - Mad Hatter (Autarkic Remix)[Relish]

Jean-Michel Blais and CFCF are both accomplished musicians. Their collaborative work on the 'Cascades' EP, which is out March 15th on Arts & Crafts, is a heartbreakingly pretty collection of lush explorations pulled forward by warm piano and a fluid mix of new age calm and forward-thinking ambient. "In a Landscape (Rework)," as the parenthetical suggests, is a cover – of sorts – of a piece by John Cage of the same name. It premiered on RBMA Radio's Discreet Music, our weekly deep-dive into all manner of experimental sounds.

Jean-Michel Blais & CFCF - In a Landscape (Rework) [Discreet Music Premiere]

Composer and cellist Rebecca Foon has been part of the tight-knit Montréal experimental music scene for awhile. With 'A Common Truth' – her second album as Saltland, due out March 31 on Constellation – her music faces climate change head on. "Forward Eyes II" is a moody, brooding piece that manages to find the hidden beauty in fear. It's not exactly uplifting, but it does present a fresh perspective on an unfortunate reality. It premiered on Red Bull Radio's Discreet Music, our weekly deep-dive into all manner of experimental sounds.

A Common Truth

Saltland - Forward Eyes II [Discreet Music Premiere]

A mysterious new project has emerged from Japan under the name 50+28, with the group’s first transmission, “夜を越えて,” premiering here. Translated as “Beyond The Night,” the song shimmers around a repeated vocal refrain, which becomes more and more alluring as it’s paired with minimal percussion, droning cello and additional layers of voices singing the line - “beyond the dark night, to the direction of sunrise” - in unison. There’s very little that happens here, but in the best way possible, building undeniable atmosphere from just the barest of rhythmic elements and an unadorned female voice. There’s not much information available yet as to who or what 50+28 is, exactly, but “Beyond The Night” is a promising debut.

The lowriders have been cruising Los Angeles with their headlights dimmed and chrome glazed in teardrops. They circle lonely blocks awaiting new anthems. Now, Zackey Force Funk and Eddy Funkster have arrived to provide. The duo’s Líneas project comes freshly-laced with slow motion soul and slanted funk. Líneas - Goodbye My Love [LAndscape Premiere]

New Zealand’s Lontalius, Lisbon’s UhAhUh, Malaysia’s The Venopian Solitude and studio team member Just Blaze show us the incredible power of cross-genre collaboration. The track opens with layers of swirling, weighty vocals from The Venopian Solitude and the banging of a lone drum. Seconds later, as her singing reaches an earth-shattering crescendo, we are hit with a wave of crashing percussion. “I'm surprised Lontalius and UhAhUh even wanted to work on that song. I thought it was too loud and wouldn't appeal to anyone,” The Venopian Solitude says. In the aftermath of the crash, this diverse set of collaborators leaves us with plaintive piano keys and clipping drums, while the same soul-stirring vocals from the beginning are chopped and screwed, slowed to a thick syrupy drawl.

Just Blaze, Lontalius, UhAhUh, The Venopian Solitude - Outlandish Talk

Tenderness is four cuts of emotional dance music from Super Tuff label head, M. Vaughan. With galloping shakers underpinned by a weighty sub-bass, the A1 cut Moon River is a blue-eyed peak time anthem. Turn Around! Is an A2 track with heavy duty low end and a tender pitch shifted vocal—a wonky patchwork of melodies that sums to something reminiscent of early Herbert. For the B-side, "Tenderness" at 117 BPM is a soft, opening tune that serves up a breaky drums, liquid pads, and a well-placed harp solo. "When it All Happens..." is a DJ Aakmael inspired groover that leaves the EP with a driving kick, chunky Moog bass, and a vocal sample wailing out from the pains of heartbreak. Don't cry! Here at SB we are quite partial to a bit of jackin' acid house! And it doesn't get much finer than Argentinian-born, Barcelona-based producer @nehuen 's new EP on @iloveacid.

'Not For Me' is one hell of a dark, brooding & sweaty banger. The kind of 303 bassline, that when you lock it down in the studio you know you're onto a winner. Complemented by stellar hi-hat management that switch the groove and keep everything locked in a hypnotic stomp, extra crispy of course.

Best known for co-running the Classicworks imprint with Cardopusher, the pair are also label mates on Boys Noize, and have a similar approach of raw, machine funk – finding the sweet spot between acid, jacking techno and EBM.

The colours were golden and fragrant green, reflective of the season in which all things began to change and quiten. Autumn was a funny time to be alive, watching the sun fall beneath the horizon cast a shiver up his spine as he looked out into the distance with a faint sense of regret and hesitancy.
