Like every other English teenager living within 150 miles of London or Manchester, Chris Duckenfield was significantly affected by the late ’80s acid-house craze. After bopping about at Sheffield’s Jive Turkey parties, Duckenfield bought himself a pair of Technics and began to put together a set. Sheffield’s vibrant illegal party scene at the end of the eighties introduced Chris to a different style of music and DJing altogether; he was hooked.

With a swathe of productions and a label under his belt and a great pedigree as a DJ to match his production skills, we are delighted to have him back in the booth at Subculture, and, as a true brother in arms it’s also very fitting for him to be here again as we celebrate 20 Years of Subculture.

In true gentleman style, as a treat for Harri & Domenic, ahead of his return to the Subbie, he recorded this exclusive 20 years of Subculture mix for your listening pleasure.

If that's not enough he also pulled together a History Of Acid House mix in Manchester a few years back, it's proved very popular and if it's more good music you are looking for this fits the bill pretty accurately:

"I was actually planning something different, but then decided to play from the heart, follow the mood and vibe I had that day, which always works out best. And since it's a deeeeeepcast, I figured I'd play some deep, emotional and soulful party vibes that mean a lot to me. It's kind of a love letter actually.. summing up my recent times in different ways. It's got quite a few records traded or gifted between friends, so for the intro and two others I wanna give a huge shout out to Roberto in Toronto for selling me those records and serving up a delicious BBQ! @midland: “With this mix I wanted to try and capture the sound of me in the club during a long set in the part of the night when you and the crowd are locked in to a groove; a time when you’re able to make left turns, but it feels totally natural. As ever unreleased records sit alongside new records alongside records that came out 10/20/30 years ago. I definitely wanted to build to a more electro/rave crescendo in the middle of this, and try and plot a course through some broken stuff towards the end. I really enjoyed recording this one!”

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.
