DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

With 2017 coming to a close, and absolute heat like Fewnolder and Aquecoucou burning up floors and headphones across Europe, rising Parisian producer and label owner Pierre Moritz has a few tricks up his sleeve on the latest release on Copie Blanche; a two-sider featuring local favorites Rochenoire and Armless Kid. Today's feature is the B2 by Armless Kid, Peter Tosh.

An accomplished selector with mixes under his belt for RinseFM and Defected, Armless Kid takes a very effective stab at low swung disco, replete with diva coos, sultry basslines, and a percussive gallop that really locks. The main energy of the track is laid down early by some extended samples of the song's namesake; a member of Bob Marley's original Wailers, Peter Tosh was an accomplished reggae artist and activist. Armless Kid makes clean work of Tosh's gravely tone and jamaican cadence to add real weight to the overall track, helping to showcase and outline some pleasant contrasts between the sentiments expressed vocally and the musical feel by which it is accompanied. Peter Tosh may have spent his years making music at a significantly lower tempo; that being said, with the help of Armless Kid's flawless editing and taste, he might've had a promising career in house.

Most of our readers have probably heard of the anonymous collective known as Apparel Wax. If you can’t recall their name, I know for a fact that you've heard the lead track from the label's phenomenal 2017 debut “001A1” that rose to the top of Juno’s deep house best sellers.

Although the title doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, the song’s opening seconds are one of the most memorable and satisfying moments of dance music we’ve been lucky enough to experience last year. We loved it so much we asked the label’s curator Giuseppe D’Alessandro to do an interview and mix for us a few months back. I suggest you read it to get a better understanding of their history and why the label’s contributors are anonymous. Hint: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!

In their follow-up record, Apparel Wax have once again employed the work of ghost producers to come up with a record simply titled “002.” Similar to the first, this release contains a mixture of four-tracks that fall on different spectrums of the disco-jazz-funk plane - a real taste-tester you can say. We were lucky enough to get our hands on the A1 of the release, and it’s quite the thumper.

Featuring moody vocals and an assortment of looped guitar licks, “002A1” relies heavily on a throbbing bassline to carry the listener and their feet throughout its entirety. However, I would say the real gem of the tune lies within the horns that come in around the 3 minute-mark. Once those bad boys come to the forefront, “002A1” begins to exude a vibe that’s more romantic and care-free than what the yearning vocals signify at its start. Day-time disco enthusiasts and DJs alike are sure to love this track for it’s funky, yet soothing aesthetic.

Francis Harris is a founding member of the Scissor & Thread label - a Brooklyn-based imprint established 2011. Previously releasing under the alias Adultnapper, Harris established Scissor & Thread as an outlet for deeper, more personal sounds, as well as music from a range of associated artists including Black Light Smoke, Bob Moses and Aris Kindt. Harris’ own output has gone from tightly wound tech house bombs as Adultnapper to intricate and expressive musical journeys, and has seen him branch out with a new label - Kingdoms - a home for adventurous music from across the board.

More We Cannot Do is a perfect example of Harri’s feel for depth and dynamics - the track is seeming submerged warm amniotic fluid - cocooned in compression that the listener can get instantly lost in. A think, subby bass provides much of the groove, with skittering percussion on top and luscious fragments of melody. Minor Forms, the EP’s title track is cut from similar cloth - emerging form a subtly distant place to inhabit a melancholic, beautifully evocative space - somewhere between ambient, jazz and the dancefloor. Valentino Mora offers up two exquisite reworks of Minor Forms to complete the EP. Mora, the Berlin based Uruguayan producer, brings his own layer of depth to Harris’s originals - the Underwater Rephrase version adds a propulsive kick and manages to shimmer and shake in subtle, beautiful ways. The Cosmic Trans Rephrase is somehow even deeper - a bubbling bass pulse anchors the track while pads drift in and out, adding to the blissful, meditative whole.
