The new album of Swiss artist @martina-lussi joins what no longer is conjoined. Conceived and realized over a period marked by changes in both the private sphere and the world at large, none of which were thinkable before, Balance brings together the before and after. “Fragments of Attention” is the fulcrum of the album: it separates the first half, written before Covid, from the second, composed during the lockdown. The six-minute track serves as a rupture and bridge between a career at its by no means definitive apex and a new uncertainty in various aspects of life.

In spite of the division, Balance is held together by a common feature: Lussi’s voice, with which every composition began. Her singing, modified by effects, is supplemented by other sounds, which are light at times, bittersweet at others, and sometimes replace her voice altogether. Lussi’s singing plunges “Meditation on the Multitab” on the first half of the album into a cosmic soundscape; occasionally a rhythm irrupts into it. On “Time Lapse,” a track from the second half, the artist’s singsong articulates rhythmical elements and propels them towards a reluctant euphoria.

As an album, Balance appears open and fragile, at times even vulnerable, but Lussi’s relentless openness derives from the immense strength needed to weather changes both small and large.

Following the album’s production, the artist had Balance translated visually and olfactorily. The Amsterdam-based perfumer Niklaus Mettler concocted a scent based on the album, which accompanies the release. The artwork, into which the scent is integrated, was designed by the Zurich-based graphic designer Dorothee Dähler.

Martina Lussi is a Swiss artist and musician. Her work, in which she frequently uses sound, has been shown in museums and exhibition spaces around the world. Her music has been released on Latency, Hallow Ground, and Otium, among other places. Following Lussi’s debut Komposition O08 and the split 10-inch ASIHNT / FOF19, Balance is her third release on the Swiss label Präsens Editionen. The new album appears in the label catalogue alongside releases by @samuelreinhard , @beliawinnewisser , @magda-drozd , and Leo Hoffmann.

"Highly regarded around these ways for introducing the likes of Ronce on his Dawn Records label - with whom he collaborated on the ‘Aquatics’ LP - and a string of ace compilation cuts, visual artist-turned-producer Hajj renders his most ephemeral yet affective conception of a negative ecstasy in ‘Drag Me Into the Void’. The three tracks reprise the billowing introspection of his 2020 debut for Brothers From Different Mothers , ‘Dédicace À Personne’ with a subtly refined palette and sound design, dematerialising traces elements of late ‘90s trance and up-to-the-second trap into thee gauziest, gently buoyant ambient space.

The trio of tax slot neatly into YOUTH's cross section of contemporary bedroom/living room/imaginary club space with a breezy mutability. ‘Drag Me Into the Void’ appears in subtly alternate mixes, bathing a trance siren vocal refrain in anaesthetising reverb and vapourized traces of emo-rap drums with a sublime sense of deferred gratification on the original, while nipping/tucking to more elusive allure in the ‘Euphoria’s death edit’. In the middle ‘Reverse Catharsis’ augments the syrupy ambient rap aesthetic with more pronounced woodblock percussion hinting at Burial hitting the downstroke, and lit up with killer, trancey hyper-blooz synth plucks. Heith’s devout interest in the notion of reality started long before he recorded his latest album. The Italian musician, producer and artist probed the spiritual aspects of sound and its cosmogonic potential already in his previous works released on his own Haunter Records label.
Exploring the textures of consciousness through research into the ritual animism, he kept an omnivorous and universalist approach to cultural and sonic influence. This is central to X, wheel, Heith’s debut album and first release on PAN. It’s a deep dive into his creative and spiritual practice, one where art and life are inextricable.

Written and recorded across different studios in Milan, Rome and Florence between March, 2019, and January, 2020, eleven tracks cycle through a world of stylistic references—from psychedelia, psytrance and freak folk to stoner metal, noise and early electronic music—while remaining firmly a part of a singular vision.

Album opener “Letter 4” staggers along collaborator Leonardo Rubboli’s winding guitar melody, while second track “Dero” cycles into layers of assorted sine wave lines and tonal systems outside of the Western diatonic scales. X, wheel sits calmly at the centre of its own vortex of dissonance and diversity, moving through a spectrum of ideas, moods, and emotional states with uncanny ease. A glimpse of contributor Jesse Osborne- Lanthier’s synth melody briefly surfaces from a cacophonous flood of reverb and distortion on “Stoned Witch”. Aase Nielsen’s lonely saxophone wanders around the nostalgic hypnagogic noir of “Ensemble For Somnambulists”.

Heith draws together an array of philosophies and fictions together into a sonic tableau that exists outside of linear time. As the titular wheel spins, it does not bring about repetition, rather constant change and movement, spiralling into infinity.

The hypnotic nature of the release is translated in the album’s liner notes. It’s a collage of sorts, constructed from Heith’s own diary entries using the non-phonetic alphabet and linguistic experiment called “Angel’s Hair” developed with artist Pietro Agostoni. Together with contributions from ZU drummer Jacopo Battaglia and didgeridoo player Fabio Goldaniga, X, wheel is an exercise in creating new forms of meaning through sound, turning spectral vibration into conscious awareness.
