Peerless rhythmist and sonic explorer Afrikan Sciences makes his PAN debut with 'Circuitous,' the third full-length, freeform offering from the New York-based artist.

At the nexus of Afrofuturism, science fiction, transcendental free jazz, and future hip hop, this new work from Eric Porter Douglas casts itself and its creator in a liminal zone most recognizably charted by astral traveler Sun Ra. ‘Circuitous’ follows from nearly a decade of releases for Deepblak —the Oakland-rooted imprint of frequent collaborator Aybee— and shares common blood with both the elevated consciousness of late '80s club culture and contemporary West Coast beat scene

Built around Douglas’ signature polyrhythms and complex melodies, the unorthodox agility demonstrated throughout the album’s fourteen tracks reflect his long history of live, improvised sets combining multiple turntables, upright bass, and a command center of digital tablets and controllers. Each track maps the artist’s own movements, tracing paths of flight, highway trajectories through tunnels and over bridges, and rides through rough and gated neighborhoods. If familiar on the surface, deeper or repeated listenings to ‘Circuitous’ reveal the dynamic multiplicity embodied within.

'Circuitous' is a free and unbound body of work—one that defies easy classification yet translates fluidly across multiple environments—compiled over double LP in order to fully realize the scope of Afrikan Science's sonic palette.

Nomadic producer Zen in Space releases LP Earth Tones, following two consecutively sold-out 12” releases on Moonshoe [MSH003] and Post Pluto [PPC001]. The warm & lush textures of Earth Tones were produced over 2 years with inspiration taken across Australia’s vast & captivating landscape. 

Here, we hear an array of sounds from ambient to downtempo, as well as experimental electronic. Earth Tones features various live instrumentation, analogue synthesis, drum machines and exotic rainforest, outback & wilderness field recordings; captured throughout Australia’s rich landscapes. Zen took big inspiration from artists such as four tet, boards of canada, floating points & leafar legov, to name a few, in creation of this project. 

Earth Tones aims to encapsulate the intense beauty of natural earth in all its shapes and forms, and the value we must give to its diverse landscapes & life. Earth Tones hopes to bring attention to the value & significance in preserving & respecting natural ecosystems & their deeply delicate & ancient systems.

MIMS is delighted to host the world premiere of the first ever collaboration between Emanative and Vula Viel’s Bex Burch! And it’s a banger! Deep 808 drum machine and African-inspired percussion meets cold-wave post-punk. Producer and fellow percussion-addict Hector Plimmer even gets in on the action to sprinkle some additional charms.

Emanative makes his vinyl debut here for Shapes of Rhythm following contributions to their ‘Isolation Compilation’ and an ‘Awkward Corners EP’ both earlier this year. Known for his love of collaboration, Emanative connected remotely with Bex Burch during the global lockdown. 

Disrupt #4 is the result of a meeting of two percussive minds in the midst of a pandemic, and like all good things it started with a groove. Nick initially provided Bex with a hazy, 808 african-inspired sketch. What followed was a musical dialogue which quickly gained momentum.

A post punk-esque vocal mantra was added, reflecting the here and now of 2020 and driving the track forward. Bex’s trademark Ghanaian Gyil xylophone is the conversation with the groove throughout the track. Hector Plimmer also joins the collaboration, seasoning the mix with synthesizer and tape delays.

Released November 6th, strictly limited to 300 copies, the first 50 come with an inner signed by the artists, and the record and sleeve have been produced "as green as possible" by Deep Grooves in Amsterdam (the greenest vinyl pressing plant in the world). "Disrupt #4" is backed by an equally disruptive remix from Awkward Corners, whose debut LP this year surely ranks among this year’s best.
