Video gambling addicts, academic researchers, and industry professionals alike describe the trancelike state into which problem gamblers suspend themselves with remarkable consistency: they unanimously call it the machine “zone”, a kind of inner experience during which the rhythmic flow of human-machine collusion borders on mysticism. Time is abolished in the act of contemporary video gambling―simulated slot reels roll, virtual poker decks deal, and all worldly concerns are lost―leaving only the aura of total zone immersion in its wake. Sometimes characterized as the crack cocaine of gambling, the intensity of the machine zone is a symptom of casino ergonomics: oxygen-saturated pleasure air, subtly controlling walkways, mesmerizing lights, and, as captured here, meticulously engineered sonic environments all play a role in evoking the timeless void of the zone.
          Although I was not yet aware of the extent to which casinos tailor their environments for maximum comfort (and, correspondingly, profit), I did know as I crossed the threshold of my first casino floor earlier this year that it would not be my last visit. Hit by a cornucopia of slot machine tones, triggering aleatorically and coalescing into shimmering masses, I was struck by the need to return and record the sounds that so entranced me. It wouldn't prove to be easy―casino security is intense (you can hear me get warned of the consequences of taking photos at the beginning of the disc's second track)―and due to the clandestine nature of the operation, my recording techniques were by no means sophisticated. Equipped with nothing but an Olympus LS-11 recorder's internal microphone stashed in a sweaty coat pocket, I allowed the lure of the zone to guide me through a series of ambling recording sessions over a period of four months, the best of which are included here. 
          I learned a lot about casino sonics in the process: game designers, for example, tune their machines to the key of C in order to optimize harmonic cohesion; one team of designers, the story goes, even spent a month perfecting a single 'ding' sound on one machine. In the interest of preserving the true ambient sounds of the casino these recordings are completely untreated, but lost in the sea of chance I did exert some affirmative control by means of meandering intent and my actual playing of the machines. And by participating in the games myself I got a taste of the financially debilitating consequences that accompany the enchantment of video gambling. The disc in your hands represents my endeavor to bring you the zone experience without the harsh comedown of its unfortunate reality.

Since a few months of silence Indigo Aera returns with a series of new exiting releases. Kickstarting the new season with one of Parisian's finest: Antigone. Besides being a resident at Parisian's Concrete movement, Antigone is responsible for highly acclaimed releases on Construct Re-form and Ars Mechanica, Children Of Tomorrow and the Concrete label itself.

Antigone's signature sound is a fine blend of soul searching strings on top of cutting edge sci-fi techno rhythms as evidenced by the eerie and spine tingling 'Words Of Silences'. Next, 'Third From The Sun' is a much quicker and more frantic but just as smooth and deep techno cut with celestial pads and a heavenly sense of calm. On the b-side there's a straighter 4x4 remix from label heads Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff that offers plenty of bang for its buck.

Kayla Cohen, a.k.a. Itasca, is a folk guitarist and songwriter from New York State. She has released several small press CD-rs and cassettes over the past five years, and began recording as Itasca after a move to Los Angeles in 2012. She records at home, taking inspiration from the fringes of LA's open space and natural land.

On Itasca’s latest full-length, Unmoored By The Wind, Kayla Cohen achieves new levels of clarity and expansiveness. Where 2012’s Grace Riders on the Road reveled in homemade intimacy, Unmoored By The Wind  opens to the world, reaching a timeless, near-baroque yearning; each of these eleven tracks burns with a unique vision. At once soft-spoken and virtuosic, Cohen’s fingerpicking mesmerizes, laying gauzy groundwork for vocal work David Keenan rightfully cited as “courtly…dazzling.” It’s a spacious set of songs, one you can wander into, flowing seamlessly between wistful interludes a la Bob Desper and fully-fledged verses of powerful, often beguiling imagery. “Two male shapes are standing/ Shrouded in white cloth” sings Cohen on “Nature’s Gift,” with a plaintive candidness that echoes Sibylle Baier. “They’re looking at me/ Sort of smiling/ Seems as if I’ve called them here.” Cohen’s voice has a windburnt quality reminiscent of Lal Waterson or Collie Ryan, but it’s tempered with sweetness, and on songs like “Colt In Hiding” she realizes an angelic luster. More than ever before, though, Cohen’s confident singing is laid bare; vocals ride on top of arrangements, taking their rightful place in the forefront. The effect is arresting. Cohen has achieved new levels of clarity, while staying true to the seductive ghostliness that has come to characterize her sound.

As some of you might have guessed by now, music is incredibly important to me. I can't imagine not having the ability to express my creativity and discover more about myself through music; I've always had the option of studying, creating, and performing on musical instruments. I don't know where I would be if my family hadn't been economically able to provide me with all those opportunities. 

Therefore, I think it's important for me to give back. I want to do what I can to help make such opportunities available for people that otherwise couldn't afford them. In an ideal world, monetary barriers wouldn't hinder anyone's ability to experience self-discovery, creativity, and personal growth through music. It's hard to pinpoint Parisian producer, Twenty9's sound, but the amalgamation of all his influences definitely amounts to something extremely nostalgic. The feeling is undeniable thanks to breezy rhodes and warm 80s analogue sounds and there's also no doubt that his work would slot right into the catalogue of artists pioneering that unmistakeable 'Toronto' sound. 

'So Far Ahead' is the first single off TapeTrack Vol. 3, which we see as a dedication to modern R&B. It's a reminder to where the R&B scene is moving thanks to modern classics like Frank's "Channel Orange" and Drake's last record. Coupled with sub knocking bass, Twenty9's given us something distinctly him with this release.

Twenty9 - So Far Ahead [Side A]

Following up from the success of his emphatic PAN releases ‘Dutch Tvashar Plumes’ and ‘Diversions 1994-1996’ in 2012, we are excited to announce ‘KOCH’ (pronounced “cotch”), the new album from London’s Lee Gamble.

Sharing some stylistic affinity with his previous records, which excavated his deeply personal history with UK jungle and rave, and techno, this new work dives even deeper to reveal a singu- lar and intimate musical vantage point, shifting to approaching music as projection, state, hallucination, an other place. In ‘KOCH’, we experience an artist constructing a future after time spent deconstructing the past.

In the music we witness such dimensional abstraction, zooming between epic macro scenery and claustrophobically close detail, disorientation and absolute focus. Rhythms fuse together and phase apart, club tracks tunnel into an anxious wilderness, with themes and textures emerging as threads throughout the record, wormholing between each track.
There is a sense of the seen and the unseen, an honest tension between music as function (for this world) and as artistic exploration (for another world) as cracks in the surface appear to reveal the odd and alien minutiae within.
‘KOCH’ represents an intimate and revelatory new phase in Lee Gamble’s practice. Producing tracks that can live and grow on their own in a club or personal listening environment, the artist’s exploratory framework creates threads of consistency and tension between disparate spaces, locations, and mental states.

The LP is mastered and cut at D&M, with artwork by Bill Kouligas.

Adriana Lopez - 413 - Electronic Explorations

The sixth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by Dalglish..
Born in Edinburgh. Chris Douglas – aka O.S.T. / Rook Vallard / Dalglish grew up in San Francisco and began studying piano at age 8. Released first EP on Detroit based Switch Records in 1992. Founded Qlipothic Records in 1996. He has created a large body of work, a highly textured and confrontational take on traditional forms of electronic dance music.

With initial releases and early formative years spent in Detroit and San Francisco, he acquired several high profile fans such as Autechre who had him support their 2001 ‘Confield’ tour of North America, then later brought him to Europe to play their curated ATP festival, where he has remained since.
The digital only version of ‘Benacah Drann Deachd’, his latest release has been receiving some of his most eager reception to date, with a full page review in the June issue of the Wire:

“Chris Douglas haunts his own music. A nomad and something of a loner, he has rattled around the electronic music network like a busted component for the last decade and a half [...] It’s appropriate, because his music is one of the most striking evocations of the life of the mind that you’re ever likely to hear. The music is substantially live, improvised within a loose framework, and the shifting layers of grey-green tone, fractured samples and nervous tics that whip around the stereo field obsessively tease out new geometries and shapes ..” Derek Walmsley, The Wire
