A cinematic cut from City & i.o’s forthcoming album ‘Chaos is God Neighbour’. 

Filled with tension and eery soundscapes, ‘Bomb-blasted Stack’ featuring vvilms leads into the shorter part of the album with a duration of 3 minutes 52 minutes, however, it is packed with emotion. Starting with ominous synths, the track drifts into a blissful piano melody layered with crackling effects, almost like a haunting lullaby finding the beauty within the murkiness. 

‘Chaos is God Neighbour’ is the full-length follow-up to their 2019 record Spirit Volume and features extensive contributions from collaborators Dis Fig, x/o and vvilms. The album was composed at frenetic pace over several weeks in mid-2020.

The Church of the Old Blood used to be the main point of worship and leadership for the village where they worshipped [what they thought was] the Blood of Lorkhan, but since the Blood stopped flowing from the roots (aka: the big Hist tree got too old to make new sap) the church has fallen into decay. It now has one very paranoid priestess and one very overworked acolyte. I wanted to mix more traditional gregorian elements an old chant from the medieval period is used) with elements from the hist and hints of the other composer, DanVictory's Hist boss theme sprinkled in. ‘Motion’ is the new EP release on PAN’s sublabel CODES from Belgian producer SKY H1.

Having previously collaborated with producers and collectives such as Bala Club and Creamcake, Brussels-based SKY H1 has since performed at the likes of multi-media 3HD Festival and Amsterdam’s Sonic Acts to high acclaim for her distinctly forward-thinking sound.

Drawing from a background of widely-varying musical tastes from Ambient to Grime, her own work is an amalgamation of emotive compositions of orchestral Elysian synths, often displaced with sparse percussive elements.

The new record, ‘Motion’ is a highly personal endeavour, constructed from the results of a turbulent time - where she describes it as ‘a flash of her emotional state over the last few months’. “It signi-fies leaving behind a period in my life and stepping into something new.” She explains.

Moving through bleak soundscapes layering vaporous choral synths, ethereal vocals and glassy, lucid tones crafted in complex structures, the record bears moments of melancholy as well as joy on tracks like ‘Tell Me’ and ‘I Think I Am’. “It's about going through the different stages of grief and accepting the positive effects the loss of someone can have on you.” She says. “It's about experiencing an intensely emotional time with a lot of ups and downs, and I think this is transparent in the way the tracks are ordered.”.

Blush is an experience of feminine interiority. It evokes the life of a young girl through flashbacks, a vivid return of the repressed. Beginning with the void, its layers upon layers of free associating sounds weave an ethereal lullaby, punctuated with sharp, visceral bursts of dark memories and harsh epiphanies. It’s the girl’s attempt to pierce through the facade of adulthood.

Blush is surrender to euphoria, instant gratification, isolation and ambiguity- the compulsion to open yourself up to feelings new or distantly remembered, to memories of apocryphal events. Most importantly, Blush is somewhere else that you can go.

ava* is an artist based in Berlin, Germany.

Her initial involvement with music was through the use of her voice. In 2018, she released ‘Juice’, a vocal-driven experimental project, with Zach Tipitt on the Japanese label Dark Jinja.

Since then, her focus has shifted entirely to production. Although she’s only been producing for a year, she’s been collecting samples and field recordings for over five. The tracks on her new project, Blush, are assemblages of these sound memories, which she’s warped and obscured to create an aesthetic that’s both familiar and otherworldly.

As a producer, ava* creates environments that are loose and innocent, yet stark and haunting. Sounds float by and pierce through unpredictably, creating dense ambient atmospheres with pulses of drama. She hopes her music can inspire people to go “somewhere else,” whether it’s a made up place or somewhere they’ve been before.
