Following last year’s dreamSTATE VS. Heiki “The North Shore”
album, paper+sound label boss Heiki Sillaste releases his first solo
single in two years.
Moving away from the zero-bpm ambience of his last album, Heiki’s
“Future System” track is an uptempo stripped down techno stomper.
Opening with a seriously DEEP sub-bass and dubbed out percussion,
the single progresses into a chunky rhythm, battling syncopated
synth stabs.
A subtle phased synth arpeggio is introduced mid-way through
the track, creating a melancholic melody, while disjointed “found”
voices stream in and out of the mix. A polyrhythmic 303 acid
baseline peaks “Future System”.
Heiki is currently at work on his next full-length album, due
for release on paper+sound later this year. “I’ve dusted off all of
the vintage analogue synths and array of ancient drum machines
that I’ve collected over the years. Combining the old gear with the
advances in the iOS world of music making, has helped me in the
process of creating new loops and sounds that will form the basis
of my new records.”
Heiki (Hey-Key) is a veteran of the Toronto electronic music
scene. Since 1987, Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive
catalogue of well over 45 synthesizer-based records and made
over 150 compilation appearances.

Sub Bus b/w Low Level Transit Movement came out of a series of experiments that involved myself responding in real time musically to my daily public transit commutes to and from my day job. These commutes which at the time of composing this material were abut 2 hours in length each way, sometimes a little longer. My process was simple, using either an iPad or an iPhone and one of many different iOS music making apps I would write one part of the tracks found in this 2 song single, responding in the moment on the bus or subway to how my commute was making me feel. Each track was written in a multi day process, drums, bass, synth melody or lead, percussion and so on. Once I got all parts written out I would use that as raw material to compose each track in my home studio, finally resulting in the single your listening to now. Thanks for listening, naw

Neil’s interest in sound and technology has lead him to a continued questioning and refinement of audio tools and modes of production resulting in experimentation with altered instruments, modified devices, and custom software environments. Neil’s music could be described as warm, atmospheric,
and cinematic electronic music. The sound design of naw is firmly grounded in the rich traditions of dub studio culture but can also be weighed alongside formal contemporary composition. His music
was recently described in “The Wire” as having “…the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays.” Neil has released music on various labels
Noise Factory Records for his naw project and on Elevation Recordings for his most recent project Whisper Room. Sub Bus is his second release on the paper+sound label.

Chromosphere_Down Drafting

LES FONTAINES are a Toronto "éléctro-psyche" synth pop duo.
Their brand new Canandaa e.p. is a four single available in DL and limited edition cassette formats.

Canandaa (part 1) is taken from Les Fontaines' debut 8 track LP "MAGIC TOUCH", which is also out now on Toronto's paper+sound label. Parts 2 and 4 reprise the heavy electro drone, while part 3 aims directly at mutant disko dancefloors.

The four tracks on the Canandaa single were created solely utilizing a small collection of vintage synthesizers, drum machines and cheap & nasty effects units.

Long sessions of electronic music improvisation influenced by a collection of cheap 80's hi-energy 12" singles, fueled by other-worldy substances.

Les Fontaines love their distorted hand-played synth leads, over-layed on top of choppy drum box funk rhythms, arpeggiated bass lines and swirling, walls of phased sound. Occasional metallic voices float in and out of the mix, commanding the listener to pay attention.

Les Fontaines create their own singular sound of psychedelic, electronic, art synth punk-funk.

Lorenz Peter (synths, noise, turntables) has played in numerous duos, including CORPUSSE and in bass synth duo PROCESSOR.

Heiki Sillaste (synths, drum machines, effects) has previously made music as cult elektro industrialists DIGITAL POODLE and electronic maximalists KINDER ATOM.

De Haga explores a space ungrounded by transient melodies and somber ambience. Light touches decay and tread along minimalistic arrangements that move into unknown depths and dimensions. Analogue synthesis and artificial percussion paint the transparent backdrops of Thereness.

Songs written between Toronto and New York. Hardware includes analogue synthesizer, drum machine, and MIDI sequencer that were recorded directly into a DAW.

climate adaptive capacity is another foray into to the psyche of naw’s abstract interpretations of the world we live in. As in the past naw draws in his continued inspiration of the sound ecology of cities, places and spaces he encounters on a daily basis. For this album naw explores the recent hot topic of climate change and the associated changes, more importantly the adaptations surrounding these climate changes. Exploring both the planets and human adaptations from simple observations of ground frost changes to more complex life style changes that are making in order to continue living on earth to the more morbid thought of an earth that we can no longer inhabit. 
Climate Adaptive Capacity is his first release on the paper+sound label and is available in a limited edition digipack or download.

Sister Ship is a continuation and revisiting of an earlier tune called Mother Ship which I released in the 
late ’90′s on Plan 11 Records. I made Sister Ship for my older sister on her birthday a year ago.In my 
formative years, zero through ten, she entertained me, our parents, and even the immediate surrounding 
neighborhood, with the peals of Glam, Funk and Disco from her vast vinyl collection through the family’s stereo. 
She’s always dug nearly anything with a HARD four on the floor.

Heiki (Hey-Key) is a veteran of the Toronto electronic music scene. Since 1987,
Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive catalogue of well over 45 synthesizer-based records and made over 150 compilation appearances. Heiki began his musical career fronting the acclaimed industrial-tekno group Digital Poodle in the late 80's to early 90's and ran the now infamous Shadow Canada label. In 1995, he went on to co-found nice+smooth ultramedia, an independent electronic music label and record with his band Kinder Atom.
Screen Door is taken from Heiki’s debut 12 track album Paper+Sound, his first album as a solo artist, available on both CD and digital download. The album is stylistically divided into two halves. The first half of the album features spacey minimal deep techno with an emphasis on sub woofing baselines and melodic atmospheres. The second half of the Paper+Sound album explores slower, dubbed out down tempo rhythms. Rib cage shaking bass and discrete ambient flourishes feature on all of the subtle melodic soundscapes.

Screen Door


Külm Järve Vesi appears on Sauna Porch Recordings Co., the second full-length by Toronto electronic music scene veteran Heiki. Külm Järve Vesi translated from Estonian means Cold Lake Water.

The album is a collection of new music entirely composed and recorded on the porch of the rustic sauna cabin his father designed and built in Georgian Bay over 35 years ago. Heiki made these recordings by creating a live, chilled soundtrack first, then sitting back and absorbing the Georgian Bay lake view and natural surroundings for inspiration. Occasionally he would set up a microphone, record, and then process the natural sounds of the surroundings – the wind, the birds, the rustling of leaves in the wind,
people swimming, or motorboats and canoes passing by.
Most of the initial music was quickly recorded as loops in the morning then slowly built up over the
course of a day. Songs were then revisited, treated, layered and re-built over the course of a few
weeks (or years, in some cases). Washes of sound were created by processing the field recordings
then layering them with synthesizer tones and sequences, creating a fusion of natural and
synthesized resonances.
