Now and again, an album comes along out of the blue, demanding to be licensed and shared with the world. BOM Nation's long player sounded like nothing else, only the future. Shrouded in mystery and country-of-origin unknown, Africa runs through its DNA, but sometimes mysteries are best left.

Àşę - a Yoruba philosophy signifying the power that makes things happen and produces change; given to Gods, ancestors, spirits, humans, animals, plants, rocks, rivers, songs and prayers.

BOM Nation takes influence from all corners of Africa and its diaspora, blending them with 25 years of Western electronic music into a melange of forward facing, leftfield afrofunk. Àşę features one of Africa's brightest rising stars, Luka Productions (Mali), cosmic poet Sirius Rush (UK) and master drummer / vocalist Felix Ngindu (DRC/Liverpool) for a journey into kaleidoscopic afro-tech. Gqom, ampiano, shangaan electro and cosmic township funk rub shoulders with Balearic, bass, deep house and dub for a psychedelic celebration of collaboration and possibility.

As geographical and musical barriers are broken down, BOM Nation is leading the charge; Manchester to Lagos, Lisbon to Sao Paulo, Bamako to Berlin, Àşę captures the sound of the underground.

Back before acid house changed the world, Jaye was already ploughing a unique path playing weird and wonky musics of all flavours at squat parties and industrial based do’s, she flung herself whole heartedly and without concern for her safety into the oncoming tsunami of what we would end up tagging as house, techno or the multitude of varying descriptive titles it has been given and has stayed true to ‘our thing’ ever since.

Dancing wildly at dirt box, the mutoid waste parties, the hacienda, ministry of sound, tonka, moist, sabresonic set her up for the ‘90s where, while Jaye was behind the counters of a number of soho record shops during the day and doing the ambient ‘creamy meat’ show as bish on the legendary chillin’ FM pirate radio, she was often found behind the decks at the legendary WANG parties, the back room at Golden in Stoke on Trent, her residency at London’s sadly defunct END with the ‘for your pleasure’ crew and numerous long gone all nighters and late into the night dark room parties. Getting her second wind at the start of the 00’s via the ‘softmachine’ parties she ran alongside George ‘black merlin’ and Kyle & Johnny from ‘land of light’ she’s been playing regularly across the country for numerous nights such as LOVE MUSCLE & COSMIC SLOP in Leeds, HOMO BLOC & KISS ME AGAIN in Manchester and further a field as a resident at the KALA festival as well as Field Maneuvers, Love International and dimensions in Croatia. She is also the resident at long running & fiercely loyally supported Bristol party PLU, alongside Ranks which has carved out a name for interesting left of centre guests and a distinctly gnarly music policy.

April 25 Coyote

For the 74th mix we want to pay tribute to a friend of GGHQ whom we sadly lost a year ago this week, Paul 'DJ Regal' Eve. 

We shared the second part of his 'The Bronx Is Burning' mix series back in 2019, but the file for this first part has been sitting in the GGHQ Mediafire account (remember those?) for the last 15 years. We felt it only right to celebrate Paul, and share his amazing selections for everyone to hear and enjoy. This was originally recorded and shared via Brian Not Brian and Jeremy Spellacey's 'Ghetto Disco' blog from way back, and the link (and blog) have been long inactive. 

This mix has got some absolute jams on it, lovingly selected, spliced, edited and worked into a frenzy by Regal in his home studio back in 2010. This is music for B-Boys, hustlers, poppers, lockers, groovers, smokers, shakers and movers. Inspired by the mythical block parties and mastermix radio shows of NYC infamy that have captured all of our imaginations and shaped our musical landscapes to this day.

This mix is shared here today - with love and respect - as a small tribute to the man, who is sorely missed. Part 2 of this mix can be heard here:

Paper has been pushing all things deep house and disco from the furthest reaches of the world via the good old North of England since the early Nineties.

The label has already featured a new series of EP's showcasing the best new dance music and future funk, house and disco from the world's finest producers.

We kicked off in 1994, leading the upsurge in popularity of UK house music within an underground scene previously dominated by a soundtrack from US cities like Chicago, Detroit and New York. Enhanced by a strong visual identity, as well as impeccable musical quality control PAPER was, and is one of the world’s most treasured record companies.

It continues to be funk-fuelled and bottom heavy!
