In the early nineties after Acid House was firmly instated as part of popular culture and shortly after his success with Primal Scream on the 1991 record Screamadelica, Andrew Weatherall could have easily taken a position amongst the Oakenfolds and Sashas of the world as a superstar DJ, but feigned the spotlight in favour of something more substantial.
“It’s a lot of work, once you go up that slippery showbiz pole”, he told The Independent in a 2016 interview with Fiona Sturges. “(I)t would keep me away from what I like which is making things. I mean, I had a little look in the early Nineties. I stood at the bottom of that pole and looked up and thought to myself ‘The view’s pretty good. But it’s very greasy and there are a lot of bottoms up there that I might have to brush my lips against. So, maybe I’ll give it a miss’.”

Weatherall grew up in the suburbs on the outer fringes of London, and he would spend his weekends going on “raiding parties” in the city. Trips like these would usually involve some “skirmishes” he told Bill Brewster in The Record Players, but ultimately they would involve buying records. In Beaufort Market in the Kings Road, the same road which Sex Pistols came to the fore and Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren owned and ran the Sex Shop, Weatherall bought post punk records from a place called the Cage. In the week Weatherall would be engaged in all manner of jobs just to make enough money for a weekend jaunt into the city. By the age of 13 he had become known as the “bloke with the weird records” and as he came of age he would start being asked to “come play some music”, stepping into the role of DJ as that role became more defined through the 1980’s.

“I want to listen to something in slightly open-mouthed wonder, doesn’t matter whether it’s a rockabilly track or techno. I got hooked in the idea that everything has to be new and original for a while. Originality is not what’s important, it’s authenticity.”
He knows his audience, and at Jæger his set favoured a 4/4 proclivity, but it combined guitars, synthesis and melodic vocal hooks in ways that you don’t often hear on the dance floor. His tracks come from vastly different sonic spheres but in the context of the mix they all find a disjointed relationship with each other bolstered by the unique artistic identity behind it.   
“Even if you’re playing wildly different music, I try to make some sort of connection or some sort of flow”, Weatherall told Bill Brewster when the latter asked what makes a good DJ.

Since the early 90's, the Cologne-based DJ has been standing behind the decks delivering house music in all its varied colours.

In 2001 he began to release EP’s that originally focused on nu-jazz and broken beat vibes before transforming his sound into the modern high-end house that made him and his buddies Dixon and Âme, world famous.

Besides his career as a producer and DJ, he worked (and co-owned) the legendary Groove Attack Records store in Cologne - a place where he studied all sorts of music including reggae in all its dubby variations. How deep it entered his soul can be heard on his latest EP on his label home base, Innervisions. It’s called "Broad Horizons" and features two tracks named "Skango" and "Seen" that melt his passion for dub and reggae uniquely with state-of-the-art house.

For the EDWIN Music Channel this month, Marcus dug deep into his riddim collection and prepared a mix at the Worgulator Studios, that puts the house sound he is famed for aside and instead documents his love for Jamaican music spheres in order to satis-satisfy our souls!

This mix represents the true spirit of Jah! The Rastafari Elders – Bongo shep, if you are familiar or curious about the Rastafari culture this is a great album to own.The album is a mix of Nyahbinghi chants/ hymns and Rasta Elders reasoning, making for a very powerful and insightful body of work. It was sampled on Thievery Corporation: 2001, a spliff odyssey. Located in France, High tone have been making dub infused music, filled with vocal samples and foreign instruments for over 20 years. The American poet and lyricist William S. Burroughs was remixed by Dub Spencer and Trance on the album In dub. In a quality dub trademark, they use a vast array of mixing dub techniques and his unique voice to create a masterpiece of chilled dubby vibes! Michael George Campbell (4 June 1954 – 15 March 2008), better known as Mikey Dread, was a Jamaican singer, producer, and broadcaster. He was one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. Saturday night style is on the album African anthem which features Robbie Shakespeare (Sly & Robbie), Augusto Pablo & King Tubby. On the model dub, Prince Fatty delivers a stunning cover of Kraftwerk’s electro pop in dub. See mi ya (I See you in Jamaican patois) – Riddim mix combines multiple Rhythm & Sound tracks such as See mi ya, Dem never know, Free for all, and Let Jah love come. Bandulu and Jam&Spoon were mostly known for their techno tracks but Paul Daley aka of Leftfield fame here delivers a stunning unreleased mix of Heart of Africa. Babe Roots is a new act that has released an album on Linear movement: Sun is shining sang here by Milly James is a cover of Bob Marley.

Appleblim’s Circling is one of the best releases on Skull disco, more known for Dubstep. On Rise again, legendary Dominica born MC Paul St-Hilaire delivers another smooth chant to accompany Deadbeat two step dub production.
