As we celebrate our birthday this month, it seemed fitting to invite one of our beloved family members to kick off the first APECAST of 2022. 

Westy has stood as an Ape-X resident for just over 5 years now and has become a permanent fixture in the North-East dance community. We took a few minutes to chat with him about his early experiences of Ape-X, hip-house and what it means to be a resident DJ. Check it via our Instagram 

Over the last 5 years, we have watched the Durham-born talent develop his skills to conduct dance-floors and build atmospheres. Westy possesses an unteachable secret of DJing, which is the ability to inject his spirited personality behind the decks and project it onto any dancefloor. 

After picking up decks at the young age of 13, it explains how he has accumulated such a vast record collection. Taking influences from Afrobeat, hip hop, french house and Detroit techno, it’s sometimes hard to predict what Westy will spin. After supporting the likes of Anna Wall, Kornél Kovács, Mall Grab and Archie Hamilton. The young DJ stands as one of the finest in the North East.

PREMIERE: Eliphino - You Said That [Cheeky Music Group]

It has been a ridiculously big year for this week’s guest, Alfredo Romero. In August, Alfie co-founded Next Door Records, opening their shop, café and bar in Shepherd’s Bush. Bringing in a range of guests both musical and culinary, Next Door Records will undoubtedly become an important part of London’s scene in the coming years. Alfie’s musical training and work with jazz label Readymeal Sound is evident in his releases on Dansu Discs and Dim Sum Records. His lively, instrumental and highly melodic brand of UKG has a unique flavour which has secured Alfredo a number of future releases.

Alfie’s access to a range of musical styles has allowed him to produce an eclectic GAB guest mix. Opening with ambient broken beat, Alfie quickly demonstrates his mixing prowess by blending a range of musical styles. Just before the 15 minute mark, euphoric acid is juxtaposed with breaky darkness, which is quickly relieved into some lighter synth work. For the next half hour, Alfie builds the tempo moving up through some more drum-heavy tracks. A brief jungle interlude gives way to rave-ready hardcore before Alfie brings us back down ending on his original ‘Copper Pot’.

For our second instalment, we bring you a 3 track EP from Brighton based producer Jamie Unknown. As his debut release with QRUK, we think you'll agree that he has come in strong and set the bar very high. Having been previously experimenting with Electronica, Jamie has pulled through and delivered 2 solid Leftfield Techno tracks. Taking inspiration from early House influences, we believe that Jamie is paving the way for a new generation of sound.

Stepping up to the remix plate, Detwiler delivers with his Afterdark Breaks mix. As a household name in the southern club scene, Detwiler made his name as the founder of Proxy. Since setting up his new collective Good4Friends, ‘The Arch’ Brighton Resident has developed his sound into the melodic and hypnotic side of the Breaks spectrum. Needless to say, we're here for it.
