The talented German and South African duo that comprises the LADS production partnership, has seen a host of releases on Proton Music. The most recent of these saw the "Stoyote" EP hit virtual shelves in June 2020. A musical triptych of the highest quality saw a pair of remixes from Bengal and Simos Tagias in January 2021 as Particles now returns to the EP with remixes from Italian and Canadian artists.

Operating out of his home in the Italian fashion capital, Davide Ferrario is inspired by a combination of analogue and real instrumentation. Making his debut on atish and Mark Slee's Manjumasi imprint in 2019 with the "Lullabies" EP, the Milan resident has gone on to see his music signed to the likes of Kitchen Recordings and My Other Side of the Moon. October 2020 saw Ferrario showcase his musical talent with the twin original tracks via "End of An Era", plus remixes from heavyweight, Doyeq, and newcomer, about : river. A single remix of Rudy's "All Things Fade" in February 2020 is now followed by a second as Davide Ferrario's interpretation of "Stoyote" captures the essence of the original, bringing the muted piano phrases of the original to the fore in emotive splendour. Building gently with a subtle array of syncopated plucks and stuttered effects at the breakdown, the track blossoms in the second half with a cascading cast of reversed phrasing, shimmering melody and rhythmic energy. The resultant remix is a tribute to Davide's growing Particles portfolio.

Simon Larocque saw a debut for his Silar production soubriquet in February 2016 with "Delta" on Crosslink Music. Since then, the Canadian artist has seen a clutch of impressive releases feature on the likes of BC2, The Purr and Superordinate Music. Furthermore, One Of A Kind has also been a home to the Silar sound with a number of remixes, most recently in a reworking of Th Moy's "Falling Down" in November 2020. Now making his Particles debut, the Silar remix of "Avem" is a gloriously evocative and melancholic offering that revels in the free-flowing phrasing of the original while extending the range of the original work. Taking LADS and Traumhouse's components, Silar's skill is to change the key and create a stunning new piano arrangement that sits atop deep beat and subtly ticking percussion. The result is a superlative debut offering.

To Ricciardi & Dope (PT) have an illustrious shared history. From the sun kissed Portuguese shores, the duo has found their music allied to a host of impressive imprints. To Ricciardi has been involved in the music industry since the early 1990s, subsequently graduating with a degree in audio engineering before featuring on a host of high-profile releases alongside the likes of Beckers, Frankey & Sandrino and Richard Dorfmeister. Joining forces with his compatriot, Dope (PT), the pair have made a splash on the Sururu Records, Flow Vinyl and Ohxala Records. Making their Particles debut, "Fusco" provides a sublime music box opening before emotive melodies sweep forwards. A sustained bassline and deep kick provide a rhythmic anchor as ticking percussive hats supply energy aplenty. A mid-point pause for breath creates a moment of reflection as the third movement explodes into life with a cascading arpeggio that drives the track forwards to its conclusion. "Lusco" provides a slower paced progressive offering that revels in luscious pads and delicate melodic counterpoint. Glistening in spring sunlight, the track evolves elegantly with intricate melodies, as a bassline groove and rolling percussion add weight.

A new artist pairing sees Dustin Nantais & Zoi take centre stage. Nantais has been a mainstay in the underground dance scene for almost a decade. A seasoned professional with a host of high-profile DJ performances to his name, the Toronto resident has overseen a successful production career with regular releases on Manual Music, Variety Music and Where The Heart Is. 2014's "Ideologue" was a notable Particles highlight as were remixes for Michael A and Rauschhaus. Similarly, Karachi born, Zoi, has had an explosive production career from his adopted Toronto home with releases on such esteemed imprints as Traum, Kindisch and Dream Culture. Now, making their collaborative Particles debut, the Dustin Nantais & Zoi remix of "Fusco" is a gloriously pulsating affair that captures the flowing melodic phrasing of the original while adding a swathe of new production material that blossoms in the second movement with a grooved bassline and heavy kick. Adding pitched vocal textures, the stunning melodic phrasing of To Ricciardi & Dope's work comes to the fore in a scintillating reinterpretation.

Pole Folder needs no introduction. A debut on John Digweed's Bedrock in 2000 shot the Belgian icon to fame while work for Proton Music since 2006 has assured his continued star status, as 2018's "A Glimpse Into the Past", "Serengeti" and the forthcoming, "Mara", clearly demonstrate. Particles has seen its own editions of these original tracks alongside remixes of Ferdy and Dante Pippi & Demitros in 2012 and 2018. Now returning to the label, the Pole Folder remix takes "Lusco" in a trademark progressive house voyage. Redolent in delicate melodic interaction, elements from the original blend seamlessly with Pole Folder's distinctive production work. A spine-tingling new bassline appears at the mid-point as a hypnotic motif wends its way across the third act in unhurried fashion, accompanied by symphonic strings and powerful beat. The result is a stunning new reworking.

The EP is a work of entirely modern construction, and yet it owes its origins to the ages. Programmed and produced to carry emotional weight and melodic reward in a digital age, here are the threads of a culture lost and found; spiritual, material, imagined, remembered, and mythologised.
“This EP came out of a book I read” explains Abel who was born in Casablanca and lives in Marrakesh, “the civilization of Amazigh culture, it was a maze, a maze of how people can be merged into each other and still keep the colors and sounds alive along thousands of years, an authenticity kept being modernized, and it will still be.”
This conception of a cultural maze, an expanding sphere of colors and sounds, picked up and put down, built and borrowed, timeless and modern is an abstract for Abel Ray’s four track Labyrinth EP.
At the height of their collective power the Amazigh civilization ranged across north Africa to southern Europe, it conquered and was humbled, it absorbed and it overcame, it has dissolved and yet it precipitates throughout our world. Today the Amazigh are over 50million people, large minority populations in Morocco, Algeria, Libya, across Africa and Europe, a culture at once ancient and contemporary.
