Nigel Dawson Biography

The return of a prodigal son of prog, it could be said – has bolstered the scene during strange days. From the very beginnings of what we now call progressive house, Nigel Dawson saw the foundations built and had some important plays in how it was built. In the nineties and Renaissance’s colossal influence on dance music; Dawson was a resident DJ for the Mansfield-based club night and brand from 1992, then at The Cross in London for years at the start of the new millennium - as well as creating huge musical tracks as Dominion.

Now, over a quarter of a century later and based on the other side of the world in Sydney, where he has resided for over a decade - he has made a comeback in this year of uncertainties – but with a definite thump. His recent mixes have created excitement and a new buzz, so has the return of his Dominion self – with re-releases and remixes from some big artists forthcoming. Progressive House and its global following is certainly licking its lips at what is to come for the future with Nigel Dawson back on board.

We release our 20th episode of Subterrânea with this weeks’ artist duo who has honored us with an hour-long guest mix for you. 

@aroundusmusic is a DJ/Producer duo from Amsterdam releasing their first highly anticipated EP on the 26th of August this year, their new single Undiscovered Times featured on their EP will be released today to give you a taste of what you should expect next.

In their own words, Around Us is “about melody”. Jan said “We look for the melodies”. However, we do not label ourselves progressive house or melodic techno. Gaby has a slightly sunnier melodic vibe then me, I tend to go more darker in my melodies. Above all, Around Us always remains deep”.

Their new 4-track EP called ‘Reaching Home’ features  beautiful melodic sounds, mysterious beats and driving synths will be the first to come out this August prior to the Full Album release which comes out in February of 2023.

Subterrânea Episode 020 - Around US

This weekend we are in Argentina 🇦🇷 with Alberto Blanco. Early on in his childhood, he moved to Mar del Plata were stayed until after his adolescence. His enthusiasm for both modern and electronic music gave way to a rather large and varied collection of discs. At the start of the millennium, his main influences were Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Sasha, Steve Lawler, Dave Seaman, Sander Kleinenberg, Timo Mass, Danny Howells among other great leaders of the electronic music scene. His interests and path towards his destiny began to define themselves in 2006 which lead him to roots of electronic music when he moved to Ibiza where he began his career as a formal DJ participating in various private events. As 2012 arrives, Alberto started producing with Graziano Raffa and along with Hernan Cattaneo's support of their productions, not only on his radio show "Resident," but also in the largest international clubs, they signed their first EP with Norman H’s distinguished label, Stripped Records (UK). During this time, Alberto meets and begins producing with Matias Vila, they then sign with Sangria Recordings to eventually become finalist of the Remix Contest for "dPen- Vasanizome," which was released by the major label Sound Avenue. They also remixed Granziano Raffa, for the famous label Liquid Grooves, and a remix of Matias Fernandez Vina on Underground Music Records. As we can see, 2012 has been a year full of great success for Alberto and we are sure that 2013 holds great promise with the start of many more exciting projects not only as a DJ and as a producer as well. VLKN (https://soundcloud.com/vlknzr) is a dj based in Istanbul. His real name is Volkan.

As he averages adolescence, he fanatically discovers electronic sounds. After listening, dancing and vibrating with the beats of electronic music, he decided to insert himself fully into the universe of the trays back in 2003. For some years now VLKN has used vinyl as the preferred format for his presentations. He believes that it is the most noble and beautiful format to be able to transmit what flows from within when making a set. 

His passion for music has lead him to start creating his own productions, where he is looking to continue to develop his unique sound. You can listen his first EP ''Senses'' on his Soundcloud page or on Beatport.

His sound incorporates warm, beautiful melodies, groovy basslines, and more than a touch of class. He seeks to touch the hearts and minds of dancers with improvisations based on their set, setting and atmosphere. BSV: Hello Dario! The concept of these guest mixes is to alternate artists from native speaking area and artists across the planet in order to spread the common “worldwide” vibe. You've been on electronic music scene for a long time. Are you aware that hardly anyone in the Balkans knows about you?
DARIO SUERTE: Hi, and thanks for having me on your show. Yes, it’s been a while since I first started releasing music, but I haven’t really given much thought to the fact that I’m basically anonymous in the Balkans concerning the whole electronic music scene. I guess I’m kind of a quiet guy, not really active on social media so it’s quite easy to go under the radar that way, but I can’t really say that it’s a good thing because you really need to be pushy to leave your mark in this line of work. Perhaps my approach to music is different because I don’t consider this work at all. It’s all about your inner-self, your emotions, state of mind, hopes and dreams, it’s part of who you are and not what you do. I did a couple of ex-yu remixes recently and posted them on youtube and got a really positive feedback. So I guess my Balkan fanbase is just starting to grow.

BSV: Please describe the feeling when you rendered your first track and when was that?
DARIO SUERTE: Like I said, it’s been quite a while since I started experimenting with music, but my first official release was back in 2008 under the alias Effective Thief. Being accepted to your first label and having your track released to the world is a unique experience, like the first time when you score a goal as a kid, or graduate from high school. It’s definitely a milestone in a musicians life.

BSV: Favorite effect? Is that filter?
DARIO SUERTE: This is a tough question. It really depends on the mood and genre of the track, but if I were to pick something out of the effects bundle I’d definitely say reverb and delay. There’s just some mystical feeling to the synth or drum you play when you add some of these two effects to them.

BSV: You were quite productive in last few months. Inspiration comes from?
DARIO SUERTE: Yes, I’ve had maybe 5 or 6 releases in the last couple of months. I mostly draw my inspiration from introspection. I enjoy daydreaming, deep conversations over wine, losing myself in music, nature, and having a positive outlook on life, so I guess I can say that I’m content with myself and my life in general. I tend to see beauty in everything and everything is inspirational to me…

BSV: How was this mix recorded?
DARIO SUERTE: During my previous years of DJ-ing I’ve experimented with various genres and styles of electronic music, but honestly I’ve always been loyal to the deeper sides of house music. So, I usually spend some of my free time to search for underground deep tech house, minimal, and deep tech tunes and do a mix session at home.

BSV: So, emotions guide you in production and mixing?
DARIO SUERTE: Yes, it’s a way of expressing my inner-self and parts of my mind and soul I can’t express with words and actions. It’s like peeking through a window and having a look at the hidden side of me.

BSV: Upcoming “Bliss” release is scheduled for @beatsoundvisions. Why BSV and where did you find us?
DARIO SUERTE: I’ve ran across your music online and had the impression that “Bliss” might work for your label just right. This is the second time I’m having my music released for a Serbian label and I’m really excited about the fact that more people in the Balkans might hear it. Fingers crossed!

Twenty nine episode of B2B channel. This time with… Birdsong!!! Another great and exquisite DJ, of whom I was hooked from the first time I heard him. He has been other great reference for me inside the world of house music in Mixcloud, with these fantastic selections mixed with a lot of talent and good taste, able to combine different rhythms with a lot of quality. So I am very grateful that he have accepted this collaboration with me. I must highlight his magnified session full of big moments and great tracks, like the one with which the session started and a lot of more. Without any more preambles, I take the advantage to thanks to everyone for the great support to received, and I hope you enjoy again with this new B2B episode, and have another great musical moment.

• First techno and house parties in 1993, at that time still in Delmenhorst, my home town in the outskirts (basement club at the time when the girls were still dancing on the boxes)

• From 2003 onwards, so to speak, on maternity leave, family commitments and professional work as an electrical engineer and application developer caused me to stop professional DJ work
• During this time there were nevertheless numerous livesets in the private sector
• from 2015 again various sets under the motto "hanging up in strange places" e.g. my favorite hairdresser, old people's home, psychiatry, prison, laundromat, open air on the Weser !!!
• from 2016 online DJing mainly on Mixcloud but also Soundcloud, Youtube and various internet radio stations
