If we think beyond the more obvious meaning the term “residency" holds in our culture as a platform that aims to provide stability for artists to create and regularity for the public to access their work, strengthening and deepening their relationship in the process, we realise that some of its most basic senses are lost. Here we tend to overlook or even forget the most essential ones, those that evoke feelings such as intimacy or shelter, as they relate directly to one of the most fundamental concepts of all usually attached to that word, that of “home”. And, even though it can be a lot of things to many people, for DJs it is a special place where the relation to their community can be nurtured on a regular basis and the trust that allows them to be bold in their selections can be fortified constantly. For one as devoted to his craft and dedicated to his audience as our guest for this episode, they are fundamental elements of a truly magical dancefloor that he can take anywhere and everywhere in his musical quests. This is precisely what Pascal Moscheni does at every opportunity he gets, be it through his own projects such as the celebrated Hands On Sand or in delightfully hedonistic mixes as this one in which he captures the solar bliss and the sandy textures of the Ibizan landscape and converts it into a brilliant aural journey that ends up proving that home can be more than just a comfortable place that maintains us protected, it can be an irresistible force that keeps us together.

Marquis Hawkes continues to supply quality, disco-infused house with ‘The Basement is Burning’ EP on AUS Music, featuring the euphoric and energetic title track.

It’s no surprise Marquis Hawkes is right at home on AUS Music, having released a collection of the label’s top EPs in the past two years, including ‘Chances’, ‘Doornroosje’ and ‘Love Precipitation’. Now he’s set to drop his second release on the imprint in 2017, showcasing more of his soulful and emotive material. 

‘The Basement is Burning’ leads off with a warm piano melody paired with a steady house beat which leads into a crescendo of blissful strings and synth. It’s interesting to note that the track was inspired by a distressing event in which his home caught fire and his family had to be rescued from a fifth floor balcony. Once he and his family were safe, Hawkes had to dash across Berlin to make it to a live show at 10am. A few days later, ‘The Basement is Burning’ was born.

‘The Basement is Burning’ EP is set for release May 26.

Premiere: Marquis Hawkes 'The Basement is Burning'

Marquis Hawkes marks his fifth release for Aus with another classy 2 tracker titled, 'The Phoenix' (Part 1 and Part 2). The Phoenix follows up summer hit 'The Basement Is Burning' which saw Midland, The Black Madonna and Gerd Janson all supporting at festivals worldwide.

The Phoenix is two takes on one concept. 

Part One takes the Disco and House amalgam which Marquis has developed in recent times to it’s logical conclusion, perfectly walking the tightrope between joyous abandon and classy depth, and giving DJs the perfect weapon for all floors, from sweaty basements right the way through to much bigger dancefloors. 

Part Two then flips the program with the same raw materials and sets up the perfect shot, directed at a big room House/Techno crossover, building on the foundations laid by the Detroit techno originators by infusing contemporary production values and a more modern twist.

The Phoenix is something of a landmark EP for Marquis Hawkes, once again redefining his sound. We can't wait to hear what he does next.

"Worst Love" uses an anthemic sample to create a groovy dancefloor burner with tight groove.

Doctor Dru delivers a contemporary underground pop remix.
