Following the passing of jazz legend Yusef Lateef in December, Gilles went through the innovator's extensive back-catalogue going all the way back to the 1950s, pulling out some of his personal favourite tracks. Here is part one of Gilles' tribute mix, celebrating the life and music of the mighty Yusef Lateef.

Decided to wing it and just finish this thing. The synths are very inaccurate, and very loosely transcribed, but I tried my best to create my own "pattern" for the synth to keep the cover from sounding too barebones. Nevertheless, I'm pretty proud of this one despite not being my best MIDI cover imo, but yeah, gotta love Mutemath brah. This song, especially. <3

This is episode seventeen of Future Fresh, Versace Lettuce’s series of exclusive mixes in which we feature our favorite artists that are either undiscovered, on the verge of popularity, or producing what we see as the most cutting-edge sounds in modern electronic music.

Marlin highlights two of Versace Lettuce's favorite trends in electronic music: the increasing prevalence of extraordinarily talented teenage producers, and France's increasingly apparent cultural superiority when it comes to musical taste. Of the former trend, Marlin is an 18 year old producer with an equally refined sound to many industry veterans. And of the second trend, Marlin has aligned himself with a formidable cohort of French future bass producers that loosely centers around the Parisian Point Point collective. Marlin released tracks on two of Point Point's taste making Filet Mignon compilations, and has performed alongside the quartet and other emerging forces in the French future bass scene at concerts curated by Point Point.

In a refreshing twist for our Future Fresh series, Marlin presents us some of the most accessible content that has been featured on Versace Lettuce to date. His short mix alternates between supremely funky underground electronica and some of the more respectable popular music of today. Quite a few members of today's electronic beats scene could take notes from Marlin on this tactic; including popular music in a live set or a mix does not necessarily jeopardize a performer's integrity, but instead can be tactically inserted into a set to offer a more universally applicable musical statement. In a rare manner, Marlin has created a decidedly unpretentious blend of underground and mainstream sounds that could appeal equally as well to jaded warehouse party attendees as a drunken crowd of philistines in an American fraternity basement.
