The name of the song was "Mbube" which is Zulu for "lion" and "Wimoweh" is a mishearing of the original song's chorus of "Uyimbube"…  which is Zulu for 'You are a lion'.

The Cure . . . what more can I say? First heard this song in 2019 at a Dorset Amateur Music Makers (DAMM) jam session via Meetups in the Wallisdown Absolute Music studios one Sunday evening. How did I miss it all those years?

Sadly, Covid put and end to those jam sessions in 2020, and as far as I can gather, they are unlikely to re-start, at least with the same Meetup group.

Good old Kinks. Sad to think about the late Kirsty McColl who sang a beautiful cover of this song many years ago. And sad to think of all the people I have known that I can't talk to for, for various reasons. This song is dedicated to a young lady I knew from 1968 - 1975.

Darmon Meader was a genius. To forestall any possible confusion about where this track came from, it is home-brewed.  I sang and over-dubbed the melodies 9 times.  I got help for the high notes which are out of my range. The lyrics seem to date from the 18th or 19th Century. It's blooming difficult to keep the timing tight! Not to mention keeping in pitch.

This is the ultimate in sad songs. I picked up on this song from veteran Poole Dorset UK singer Ron who had a lovely voice.  We were going to put on a "final" gig for him as his health was gradually deteriorating, but sadly he passed away in 2018 before we got the chance.
Maybe swap the second "could" for "should" . . .
