This is the ultimate in sad songs. I picked up on this song from veteran Poole Dorset UK singer Ron who had a lovely voice.  We were going to put on a "final" gig for him as his health was gradually deteriorating, but sadly he passed away in 2018 before we got the chance.
Maybe swap the second "could" for "should" . . .
