The kind of smile you offer a patient.
My coffee was cold before I noticed
That her chair had never been taken.

I tried to remember what we talked about
But my mouth held no shape.
I wiped her lipstick off my glass,
But it was never there in the first place.

I wrote down half of a name
In the steam on the window,
But it bled down the glass
Like it didn’t want to be known,

The restaurant closed and I kept sitting,
Listening for footsteps that never walked away.

That didn’t blink when I crossed the street.

Life tears away at a breakneck pace.
Though Winter stalls in a frozen space,
And Autumn leaves seem to pause the show,
The Spring and Summer make the engines glow.
They compensate for the drag and delay,
Speeding up the light of day.

Not long ago, I paid no mind
To the fleeting nature of the grind.
Everything happens for the very first time.

And no, I don’t reckon it’s bleak or wrong.
It’s just the rhythm of the living song.
I hold no grief for the chances missed,
Or the unfinished lips I never kissed.
I was merely a lad, it was natural then.
But now I’m wary of the how and when.
I treat the seconds with a solemn care,
Breathing in the thinning air.

Time.
It spins so fast, a blurred display,
I check the hands throughout the day.
Every half hour, I watch it climb,
And I shout out to the face of Time:
"Oi! Where you rushing to?
Slam on the brakes! See it through!"
But it turns a deaf ear to my plea,
It hasn't got a word for me.
I have to learn to play the game,
By rules that I can never tame.



It’s curious to speak with the younger crowd,
Reflections of me, but slightly too loud.
Just twenty years lost in the haze,
They seem much sharper than in my days.
Yet the same emotions, the same mistakes,
The same reckless view of the time it takes.

No.
I can’t dissuade them, it’s no use.
Wisdom requires a longer truce.
It comes later, as it always must.
It’s their life, and their time to trust.
They’ll spend it how they think is right,
We only offer sparks of light.

Time.

We and they are from different spheres,
Separated by the shifting years.
And that is beautiful, in its way.
Youth is meant to go astray,
To make mistakes within reason’s bound.
We just watch the clock go round.
Watching the new generation rise,
With a weary smile in our eyes.

I’m certain they’ll be better than us.
They’ll cut through the noise and the fuss.
They’ll find a way to master the chime.
They’ll find a better use for Time.
