I spent 23 June - 3 July 2022 in rural southern Italy as artist-in-residence as part of the Liminaria / Interferenze festivals.  So I haven't had time to finish up the next regular episode of the podcast, which is a tenth anniversary celebration of ACL. While we wait for the that next installment, here is a short soundscape I produced during the first phase of my residency, in Colle Sannita.

Colle is in the province of Benevento, where my paternal grandfather's mother grew up and where her family had deep roots. I conducted a multi-day workshop, mostly leading soundwalks with young students. I also interviewed townsfolk of all ages, and made all kinds of recordings of the town based on those conversations. 

As part of the return of Liminaria, I made a public presentation to town, giving a brief overview of sound studies and my artistic methodology, before presenting a live soundscape composition based on the recordings and interviews I'd conducted during my workshop. I present that piece to you here: Ritmi Rurali (suonano ancora).

Ritmi Rurali (suonano ancora) is a 15′ sound collage comprised of ambient soundscapes and interviews recorded in Colle Sannita (BN).

I set the length of the piece to 15 minutes, which is also the interval at which the church bells in the campanile ring (day or night). I was a bit surprised how habituated the Collese are to the incessant chiming. We grow numb to background noise and even if we hear, we often fail to listen. Thus I lean heavily into the sound of those bells in this piece, both rhythmically and in terms of timbre.

'To Move' is a new project by the trio of Anna Rose Carter (Moon Ate the Dark), Ed Hamilton (Dead Light) and Alex Kozobolis. Four-handed piano meets analogue manipulations to absolute wondrous effect from the London based friends.

Their self-titled album is scheduled to be released November 25th on ltd LP, CD and digital.

Cajamarca, Perú: ciudad famosa por el cuarto llena de oro que pagó el Inca Atahualpa hace siglos como rescate a los conquistadores; hoy en día también es famosa por las celebraciones de Carnaval mas locas de Perú. R. Weis estuvo allí en 2024 y grabó sonidos de las festividades que luego manipuló y compuso en "Cuando tira el agua (When You Throw the Water)." La composición de 15 minutos lanzará el 1 de febrero en los principales servicios de transmisión de música, incluido Apple Music.

La pieza comienza con los sonidos de la multitud, un corso que acerca, y vendedores de bocadillos y agua, menos para beber y más por la divertida tradición de lanzar aqua a los espectadores mediante globos de agua, pistolas de aqua, o simplemente arrojado directamente de la botella.

Continuando, sigue un montaje de sonidos del corso, elaborado a partir de grabaciones breves de muchas bandas, bateristas, cantantes, cánticos del público, y silbido musical Quechua (realizado con el dedo meñique en la boca), entre muchos otros. Pronto, las manipulaciones de Weis de esas grabaciones se introducen y se convierten en nueva música inspridada en las celebraciones.

“Cualquiera que vea estos corsos espera mojarse,” dice Weis. “Vi gente en las ventanas de segundo piso arrojando cubos de aqua a los peatones de abajo. Hay un día anterior cuando la gente, los carros e incluso la policía son salpicados de pintura. Carnaval de Cajamarca es una fiesta alegre y bulliciosa en toda la ciudad.” (En 2025, Carnaval se celebrará del 1 al 5 de marzo.)

Weis grabó 2 de los corsos realizados durante carnaval: Concurso de Patrullas y Comparsas y Gran Corso. "Cuando tira el aqua (When You Throw the Water)" está hecho enteramente a partir de las manipulaciones de Weis de esas grabaciones.

R. Weis ha estado componiendo con sonido manipulado desde la década de 1980, creando partituras para películas, danza e instalaciones artísticas. A lo largo de los años, su trabajo se ha escuchado en espacios escénicos, galerías, museos, y en estaciones de radio en todo Estados Unidos y Europa. Cajamarca, Peru: city famous for the gold-filled room an Incan Emperor paid centuries ago as ransom to Conquistadors; today it’s also famed for Peru's wildest Carnaval celebrations. R. Weis was there in 2024 and recorded sounds of the festivities which he then manipulated and composed into "Cuando tira el agua (When You Throw the Water)." The 15 minute composition is set to release February 1, 2025 on major streaming services including Apple Music.

The composition begins with crowd sounds, an approaching parade, and sellers of snacks as well as water, less for drinking and more for the playful tradition of throwing water at spectators via water balloons, water guns, or simply flung directly from the bottle.

A collage of parade sounds follows, made from short recordings of many bands, drummers, singers, crowd chants, Quechua musical whistling (done via pinky finger in the mouth), among many others. Soon, Weis' manipulations of those recordings are introduced and become new music inspired by the celebrations.

"Anyone who watches these parades expects to get wet,” says Weis. “I saw people at 2nd floor windows dumping buckets of water on pedestrians below. There's an earlier day when cars, people, even police get splashed with paint. Cajamarca's Carnaval is a happy and boisterous citywide party." In 2025, Carnaval will be celebrated from March 1st to 5th.

Weis recorded 2 of the parades held during Carnaval: El Concurso de Patrullas y Comparsas and El Gran Corso. "Cuando tira el agua (When You Throw the Water)" is made entirely from Weis' manipulations of those recordings.

Scott Campbell is an audiovisual polymath known amongst producers and sound design gearheads for his highly sought-after handmade tape manipulation instruments and drenched, textural passages released as one half of Bell Mountain (with Geoff Dumont). Photos From The Flood—and its’ companion photographic documentary—places Campbell’s latest work squarely at home on 79Ancestors, which finds itself obsessed with releases soundtracking the physical manifestations of personal nostalgia. In this case, the music and visuals explore the leftover evidence of a family photo collection, transformed by a house flood in Texas during the summer of 2016.

Awash with muted and distant vignettes, each song weaves in and out of barely-decipherable evidence of melody in decay, not unlike the warped state of the photo albums which left the artist and his family struggling to see the beauty through destruction during the aftermath of the floods. “Many of the pictures were totally ruined, but the way the colors had run and smeared created beautiful abstractions.”

The music feels like a peek into a half-preserved state, reflecting on the subtle suggestion of song while at other times gauzy folk tunes surface like lost rehearsal tapes. The warmth and melancholy succeed on a level that transcends oversimplified ambient cassette music, and the sense of loss is palpable as evidenced in the completely unrecognizable keepsakes discovered while sorting through the salvage with his brothers and parents: “It was a glimpse into their past that I hadn't seen much of before, to see these pictures while sitting in their (our) house as it was literally being torn apart was an indescribable feeling.”

Reverie is an acousmatic composition that leads the listener through an immersive fantasy centered around deconstructed music boxes. The work comprises eight sections that alternate between explorations of the music boxes’ gears and chimes. In the work, the music boxes’ sounds are pulled apart, exaggerated, expanded, and combined with other sounds whose timbres and textures are reminiscent of the original. As the piece unfolds, the timbres increase in spectral and textural density, and the associations become more and more fantastical. Gears are transformed into zippers, coins, chainsaws, motorcycles, and fireworks, and the chimes morph into rainstorms, all sizes of bells, pianos, and more. 

Reid composed the work during residencies at the Ucross Foundation and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. 

Reverie won First Prizes in the 6th International “New Vision” Composition Competition “Galaxies” in memory of Nicolaus Copernicus, the 8th KLANG! International Electroacoustic Composition Competition, and Musicworks' Electronic Music Composition Contest; Sound of the Year's “Composed with Sound Award”; and Second Prizes in both the Xenakis International Electronic Music Competition and the XIII° International Destellos Competition.
