Fantastic textures! What did you use to shift and stretch the samples, if I might ask?

These sound like or have elements of drones to me  but then not all drones sound the same....

Doris Dana is the project of Miami-based experimental sound artist, Mónica Mesa. It is a project that falls in the interzone between ambient, industrial, and tape music—an auditory exploration of the liminal space in mundane moments. Mónica is also part of the duo bad LSD trips, whose album by the same name was released via Enmossed and Psychic Liberation, and has released 3 EPs under the umbrella of doris dana since then via Miami-based labels, Impresión and Noir Age.

This mix features a selection of tracks by artists that inhabit a sonic psychedelic landscape; words; layered improvisations, and unreleased tracks—it is a soundtrack for imaginary films.

Julia Mira is a DJ, multidisciplinary artist, and LYL and Echobox radio resident from Estonia based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Inspired by a background in painting, as a DJ she takes up music as her palette. Her selections are utterly unpredictable, layering all in all, depending on the specific occasion. Her sets are expanding to a transcendent sound exploration with elements of left-field ambient, polyrhythmic rave insertions, and delicate electronic experimentalism. Approaching each set like a canvas, a blend of sensations are evoked, leaving sensual, imaginative space for lucid dreams, vivid stories, and an air of mystery to arise.

 I was at a local beach club on the lac Sevan in Armenia, hanging out with people that all had blurry faces. Suddenly, I felt a familiar presence entering the garden. The feeling was weird, as I suddenly had the impression of being split apart. When I looked behind me, I saw an older version of myself slowly running to me.

I used 4 samples from what Adlez contributed to the sound bank. I experimented with shifting the frequency of the samples then layering them and stretching them out. The results are interesting and atmospheric. There is no other instrumentation accompanying it.

I’ve been keeping my Disquiet Junto compositions sparce because I plan to use them as components for a larger composition I am working on. More info on that soon.

The Assignment: Make music from 100+ vocal samples of held syllables by members of the Disquiet Junto.

Step 1: Welcome to a large, asynchronous, distributed choir. The Dischoir consists of 113 samples of held syllables by over 50 participants in the Disquiet Junto. You can access the files at the following URL. Note that a few of them deviate from the initial instructions 3:

Step 2: Create a piece of choral music from the provided samples. You are encouraged to make music that feels “human,” that feels like it is simply a lot of people singing at once. However, of course, the end result is up to you; you can and should mix, mash, and create as you please.

Background: This all came about as a result of something Alan Bland mentioned on the Junto Slack. He pointed out that my having misspelled Disquiet as “Disquier” in the December 19, 2019, project title made him think of “Dischoir,” a possible Junto project. Thanks to Alan and to Jason Wehmhoener for helping me think this project through, and to everyone (over 50 contributors) who sent in samples.
