Deep Space Radio was originally formed in the early 1990s by Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May and Eddie Fowlkes. It was a Detroit radio show dedicated to house & techno. Deep Space Radio served as a platform where these young producers could have complete control in programming and the opportunity to expose the world to new sounds from the underground. Kevin went on to do a Deep Space Radio X-Mix for Germany’s Studio !K7 label in 1997. 2013 marks the return of Deep Space Radio as Kevin Saunderson’s monthly podcast, carrying on the tradition of introducing the most compelling new electronic music artists and presenting the deepest, funkiest techno sounds from the global underground.

On this week's Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast, we head back to one of our favourite musical cities, Detroit, for a session from one of techno’s fore-founders. 

Eddie Fowlkes, the self styled 'Godfather Of Tech Soul', has been at the heart of the techno music scene since it began. Releasing the Goodbye Kiss single on Juan Atkins’s Metroplex back in 1986, Eddie ‘Flashin’ Fowlkes has since gone on to record for some of the most legendary labels, such as Tresor, 430 West, Peacefrog, paper Recordings as well as his own labels City Boy Records and Detroit Wax. 

And Eddie continues to push his sound, this year with tracks coming on Desolat and Detroit Wax, an appearance at this years Movement Festival in Detroit, a summer booking at DC10 and plenty of European dates, Eddie shows no sign of letting up.

With both his parents being professional classical musicians, it might not be a surprise that John Tejada has become known as one of the most prolific and consistent producers in today’s eletronic music landscape. Trained on drums and the piano from an early age, the LA-based synth mastermind has since amassed his own impressive skill set, embracing the music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical sonics, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

Before hooking up with Kompakt, the much-acclaimed studio wizard had already made his own dent in the musical universe, thanks to a flurry of top-tier releases on labels such as Steve Bug’s Pokerflat Recordings, the legendary Plug Research imprint, 7th City, R&S and many more - but nothing prepared the world for those exquisite bangers „Sweat On The Walls“ and „Mono On Mono“, both released in 2004, with the latter being one of the most fervently beloved classics on John’s own label Palette Recordings. It’s here that John has continuously honed his skills, together with friends and long-time collaborators like Arian Leviste, Justin Maxwell or classical jazz guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto (as band project I’m Not A Gun).

Besides his work in the trenches of modules, patches and other things spelled synth, John has developed some serious DJ acumen over the years - travelling around the globe to light up renowned clubs and festivals such as Movement (the event formerly known as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival), Sonar Festival (both the Spain and Tokyo instalments), Dance Valley (Netherlands), Sync Festival (Greece), Mutek Mexico, Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Rex Club (Paris), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and many, many more. It’s somewhat admirable, then, that the man still finds time for his studio explorations - but the quality of the releases he has unleashed upon Kompakt alone (including brilliant full-length offerings and a couple of much-liked 12“es) bears witness to the musical genius that is John Tejada.

Derrick May is one of our main headliners at Rejected's Amsterdam Dance Event 2012 night at Studio 80, 18th of october.
Since my early dj days, I consider Derrick May as a huge inspiration, and in particular this dj set. Broadcasted live in 1996 from the legendary Chemistry night at Escape, Amsterdam. It was recorded from midnight radio by my partner in crime Edwin Oosterwal who borrowed me the cassette tape which I never gave back to him, which reminds me I should do that sometime soon.

In this mix, Derrick May shows us that in 1996 dance wasn't pigeonholed to one style or sound. He mixes Moodymann's groovy deephouse with Jeff Mills and Surgeon's raw techno. He goes from Donna Summer's disco to Tyree Cooper's jacking electronic funk, from Masters of Work's new york house to Ian Pooley's epic chord techno. All of this is mixed in a fast and skillful pace, a style that so clearly carries Derrick's signature.

There's some truly magical moments in this mix, how he get's out of Surgeon's 'Syllable' into Global Communication's 'Sensorama' at 1:09 leaves me speechless..

Even though by now I know most of the record he plays here, there's still a few I've been looking since the very first time I heard this mix. Would be great to get the tracklist completed, any help is greatly appreciated!
