The Tomas Doncker Band To Release "Power of the Trinity...A Slight Return"

Fresh on the heels of his June 2013 release "Howlin Wolf EP", which The Huffington Post said "definitely conveys the original emotion of dark brooding -- the raw elements and power of the bluesman", The Tomas Doncker Band are back with a new release entitled "Power of the Trinity...A Slight Return" (The GLOBAL SOUL Mixtape Volume 1), to be released through Doncker's own True Groove Records.

"Power of the Trinity...A Slight Return", Tomás's latest release, is a Global-Soul  meditation on the legacy of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. It features contributions from legendary bassist/producer Bill Laswell, Ethiopian singers Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw and Mahmoud Ahmed, legendary Ethiopian guitar hero Selam Woldemariam (who also served as production consultant for the project), saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum, trumpet and horn arrangements by Steven Bernstein, international Avant-Funk Super star Joseph Bowie, and a host of New York's finest jazz, funk and rock musicians.

Doncker's describes his definition of global soul as "The sound of our collective conscience. The unified rhythm of heart beats creating a positive, spiritually uplifting force for good. Musically speaking it is not genre specific, but in fact genre inclusive. It is the best of what we have to offer to each other, from Brooklyn to Ethiopia, and everywhere in between."

The EP is being released in support of The Studio Samuel Foundation's 1Hundred Girls Impact Plan (www.studiosamuel.org), a charity that supports young women in Ethopia.

Bio:

As a prime mover on New York's downtown "No Wave" scene in the early 1980s, Tomás Doncker cut his teeth as a guitarist with such genre-busting groups as James Chance & The Contortions, Defunkt, J. Walter Negro & The Loose Jointz and many more. Eventually he went international, touring and recording in Japan with jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, and producing studio and songwriting sessions with Boosty Collins, Yoko Ono, Grammy nominated Reggae vocal group The Itals, and Grammy-winning producer Prince Charles Alexander, to name just a few. Since then, Doncker has continued to work with an A-list of iconic musicians, including Ivan Neville (on his solo album "Thanks"), Bonnie Raitt, Meshell Ndegeocello, Living Colour lead singer Corey Glover, former P-Funk keyboardist Amp Fiddler,2013 Grammy award nominee Shamekia Copeland...and the list keeps growing. In 2008, he produced and released Inside Out, featuring his band with percussionist Daniel Sadownick, and followed that with The Mercy Suite, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa. Of Doncker's work, The Huffington Post says he "definitely conveys the original emotion of dark brooding -- the raw elements and power of the bluesman."

In 2010, Doncker performed for the first time in China as a headlining act at the Shanghai Folk Festival, and in front of an audience of over 100,000 as part of the Shanghai World Expo. His latest work as a singer/songwriter and producer embraces a broader musical vision that he likes to call Global-Soul, drawing influences from numerous sources, including East and West Africa and the Caribbean.

The summer of 2013 has been quite exciting for Tomás. He was chosen to create the score for Critically acclaimed playwright Mando Alvarado's "Diablo Love". It was directed by Alfred Preisser and premiered  during the course of 9 performances at N.Y.C. SummerStage Theater (Presented By Time Warner).

"Diablo Love" is a fantastical love story featuring live music that re-imagines songs made famous by American Blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, Howlin' Wolf along with original compositions by Tomás Doncker. This production provides audiences with a masterful live soundtrack of Blues/Soul music and sets the stage for a dynamic theatrical performance about love,lost souls,and the fiery pits of hell...

Tomás released a 5 song E.P. Of Howlin' Wolf tracks that were featured in the show (and to be performed by the Tomás Doncker Band). This new E.P. contained an Original Composition "Shook Down" which Tomás co-wrote with Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Yusef Komonyakaa. The release earned Tomás nods from The Huffington Post, Indecent XPosure, Big Takeover Magazine, Blues Rock Review, and even a spot on the front page of Howlinwolf.com.

The lead song in The Virtualistics was the last one written of the virtual octet during the pandemic lockdowns (May 2020 - May 2021). I wrote HPU for @JoeBiden and @VP Kamala Harris in late January right after they were inaugurated. I wanted something joyous, something to fit the mood of the country and the good news after a year of virus and years of political strife. And I wanted it funky right from the first note, from the shoutout “We the People” (an homage to Biden), to the overlapping funky bridges and cascading vocals in the outros. There are only a few words in the song: Help people up, give people hope, feed people love, everyday. It’s meant to be simple. It’s meant to be sung along with. I want you to sing the lyrics because they are the message that should be tattoo’d inside our brains. 

And the track is smokin’. To my ears it sounds like the Neville Brothers especially with Jon’s amazing bass work, but there are elements of Sly and the Family Stone (especially the group-chanting of lyrics), Dr. John’s funky cannon, the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, and many more. Writing songs in the third-person (he, she) means telling a story. Here a ballerina and an admirer take steps toward each other and she shows him how to cover the space that lies between them.   Simple enough but the vocal fireworks that build are spectacular.  The band sounds like the "Black Keys" and the vocalists open up the song with some special singing.

The music of Rooftop Runners ripples positively original pop waves through far darker lyrics than you'd expect from your typical indie fair: a seething concoction of trippy electro beats and spine-shattering bass lines is equalized by soulful falsetto vocals and folksy, dissonant guitars, making for a sobering but enjoyable listen.

Forging a mix of menacing mood and moving melody out of their adopted city of Berlin, Germany, RTR are Canadian singer-songwriter brother duo Benedikt and Tobias MacIsaac. An internationally accomplished choreographer and dancer respectively, the brothers are no strangers to performing-arts success, having toured and performed extensively with world class troupes in Europe.

Rooftop Runners' new 4 song EP "We Are Here" will be released April 3, 2012, and it's meant as both an affirmation and a promise that "RTR has arrived and they are here to stay." Patrick Ames’ newest EP is a small gift of 4 tracks, easy to listen to, and easy to sing along with. From R&B Downtempo, to American Top 40, to Classical Crossover, to Latin Folk/Pop, the new EP affirms Ames’ propensity to travel through music with his stories and emotions.  A prolific songwriter, the sixty-ish songwriter shares the stage with his two vocalists, Chana and Mikaela, and adds an Argentinian guitarist, Paulo Augustin Rzeszut. Mid-way through the project, Ames visited Buenos Aires and brought back Latin inspiration. You can hear it in the tracks, accoustic guitar work and percussion, just like the streets of San Telmo in Buenos Aires.  The EP starts with I Want You, an R&B Downtempo with Tango strumming and chord progressions. While You Were Making Babies is a straight-forward Top 40 Radio hit, pure American, pure Ames with voice a ‘crackling. Queen Kae is a Classical Crossover, written for his mother, who was a choral member and vocalist. And Te Amaba Locamente, written in Buenos Aires, allows Mikaela and Ames to duet in Spanish as he roughshod over Latin music in general.  It’s fun, it’s fast, and there isn’t a single protest song in the batch, making this EP a gift of authentic songwriting.

Bio:

My Woshin Mashin (that's right - My Woshin Mashin) was created by 3 friends from Russia and Germany. It happened in 2010 when Bibi Tulin and Hugo Simons left their previous bands and decided to make something new and different. Together with Wolfgang Scherman (their German friend who lives in Berlin and wears a crocodile mask) they gave a strange name to the project - My Woshin Mashin.

Later, under the influence of German dance tunes, Mike Patton's work, English metal bands and old school music these three released their first demo-tape "Amazing Demo", extended play "We Came in Peace" and their first long-play "Mawama" which was called "amazing (9/10)" in Brutal Resonance E-Zine, "funkelnden Kitsch" in Zillo Magazine and "better than amphetamine" in Russian Billboard.

Musically, My Woshin Mashin is eclectic and intense, but not without humor. Visually, the group's music videos have earned them recognition on MTV, in art schools (their "Twenty One" video has been shown in multiple art schools as an example), and even surrealistic trash movies such as "The Smell Of Love", which sold out on DVD.

My Woshin Mashin's new full-length album is appropriately titled "EVIL MUST DIE", and due April 30.

Of the new album, the band says "Our first album was about the characters we love (leutenant Columbo, Robocop, Godzilla etc). Hard beats, funny lyrics, dance tunes...you know, a very funny album. But when we were working on "Evil Must Die" we decided to concentrate on things from the "real" world - degradation of the television, money as a modern god, animal rights, really bad people we know and their behaviour, the loneliness of true heroes etc. By this album we're trying to say that people must be more intelligent and simple, they must to try to change themselves into a better way and try to find the real values of life. It's not about the money, a good job, democracy, power, expensive stuff, social networks or television. But it's about the inner God who can be described simply - Love."
