We are super excited for our newest guest mix, Institution 058: Jake Flaherty (Toronto).

We have had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jake on more than one occasion. Awesome human. Jake is a joy to watch live. His smile is infectious, and his passion shows through in how he plays. We asked him a couple of questions:

Institution: Jake, who was your biggest influence, musically?
JF: My biggest influence is undoubtedly John Digweed. I've spent countless hours listening to his sets and I travel the world to see him as often as I can. He has taught me everything I know about what it means to properly program a set and the importance of trying to think several tracks ahead. He famously said "The most important thing is how you program and how you choose your records. That really does sort out who is a good DJ and who is just playing records," and that has really stuck with me. I try to live up to that as best as I can. 

Institution: What was your biggest career moment?
JF: My biggest career moment to date was playing a sold-out party at Coda on October 9, 2021. There was a lineup down the street by 10PM and the house was absolutely rocking by 10:30. I was opening and I knew that my job for the night was to warm things up - but I was able to open things up a bit at the end of my set. The house lights came up and I was able to finally see just how full the room was - and that's when all the hours I've spent on this hobby of mine all came together.

Institution 058: Jake Flaherty

This is my 2nd set ever, designed with the intention to bring participants to a deeper level of ecstatic dance than they are used to. Bringing them to their limits and allowing them to call upon deeper reserves of energy within, to then establish a higher level of permanent energy in their daily lives. It was a success.

The guest in this Electronic Beats Podcast is Hania Rani, an award-winning pianist, composer and singer hailing from Gdansk in Poland. 
Hania was initially inspired to study classical music and was later introduced to jazz and electronics at music school, widening her interests and as she puts it, “mixing Chopin & Schostakovitch with Dave Brubeck and Moderat”. Other inspirations include composers such as Max Richter, Esbjorn Svensson, Miles Davis, Nils Frahm, Murcof, Portico Quartet, Radiohead and even The Beatles. But Rani’s inspirations aren’t just musical, she has drawn inspiration from places she has lived and visited. 
Over the past few years Rani’s music has gained widespread recognition, earning many acclamations such as the Sanki Award as the “New Face of Polish Music” and Transatlantyk Golden Ark Award for “Best Young Polish Composer” amongst others. Recent years have seen Hiani scoring soundtracks for several movies, collaborating with the likes of Portico Quartet and Christian Löffler and performing live shows for ARTE and Cercle, her unfaltering drive has made Rani one of the most intriguing artists in the contemporary classical world.
In this episode our Host Lindi Delight speaks with her about initial spark for her love for music, first touch with the piano, meaning of improvisation, classic and neoclassic music, Melancholie and much more.

A few weeks ago I watched one of my favorite movies, “Gladiator”.
One of the things that makes this film so special and emotional is definitely the soundtrack made by Hans Zimmer and in particular the song with Lisa Gerrard “Now We Are Free”.
An absolute masterpiece, it’s almost hard to believe that it was conceived by human beings.
It touched me so deeply, even years after I first heard it, that I felt the need to make a version of it.
I hope it touches your heart and soul as it did to me.
