Animix Thirty Eight comes from @steve-duncan, a talented digger and co-founder of the iconic @patternsofperception music collective. Born in Australia, but having spent his recent years in Berlin, Steve now resides in Helskini.

I am lucky to have met Steve through my travels, and also having been gifted an opportunity to play at one of the @patternsofperception parties in Berlin. What they have managed to achieve as a collective is beyond impressive. As a DJ, Steve's talent is equally notable - his creative and smooth mixing style, and classy selection of deep, crunchy & vibrant sounds. This mix here follows suit fittingly, meeting the perfect balance between sophistication and groove.

Mirrors 009 - Steve Duncan

Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Patterns of Perception 117 - Kaspiann

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

Patterns of Perception 118 - Faery

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Patterns of Perception 119 - Nawaz

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Hailing from Germany and now based in Portugal, @vril_01 has in recent years been quietly producing and performing some truly extraordinary electronic music. Going from strength to strength, he takes dancefloors on vivid, compelling journeys across Europe and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 121 takes us back to a very special live ambient set .VRIL performed at @nachtdigital MINT 2019, an immersive hour of lucid textures and swelling intensity.

Steve is a Berlin based DJ who cut his teeth in the house-fuelled backrooms of Canberra, Australia. Since discovering techno in a Sydney warehouse, his passion has taken him first to Helsinki and then onto Berlin where driving, atmospheric soundscapes now dominate his sets.

A founding member of Patterns of Perception, we are proud to have Steve kick off our mix series with an hour of deep techno that strikes the perfect balance between eclecticism and dancefloor functionality.

Patterns of Perception 01 - Steve Duncan

Hysteria (Ray Pham) remains a bit of an enigma. He abandoned the sunshine and beaches of Sydney for the darkness of the Berlin winter, where he found solace amongst the shadows of the clubs and the sounds within. His sets are stacked with deep and driving techno, scattered with dub and house throughout.

He rounds off 2015 with the second mix for Patterns of Perception, with a focus on a driving and energetic sound to help bring in the new year.

We’re happy to uncover this month’s edition of the Patterns of Perception​ mix series. This time, Nali​ has put together an hour of lush, melodic techno and house, bringing back memories of our favourite open air festivals.

Nali hails from Melbourne, Australia and is known for his love of spacious, organic textures. His DJ and live sets see him craft immersive soundscapes that represent maturity and discerning selection far beyond his years.

With a recent release on the Steeplejack​ label and an impressive performance at the Strawberry Fields​ festival, he’s certainly one to keep an eye on.

Patterns of Perception 03 - Nali

For the fourth edition of our mix series, we’ve asked Swedish producer and in-demand DJ Josefine Hellström Hansson to showcase her take on techno and house. The result is an hour long affair of deep and groovy cuts that perfectly blurs the line between the genres. 

Josefine is a classically trained pianist from Malmö, Sweden, who first discovered techno during one of many trips to Berlin. She has since established herself as a staple in her hometown’s major clubs and regularly plays at the famous Culture Box in Copenhagen. Josefine recently released her first solo EP Water Cave on Heartbreak Records, which has already received excellent reviews and playtime from big names like La Fleur and Âme. The title track of the EP is also featured in this mix.

Patterns of Perception 04 - Josefine Hellström Hansson

The fifth Patterns of Perception mix is a deep and driving techno affair by Ascorbite.  

Residing in the south of Sweden, Ascorbite has since his debut release in 2014 kept himself busy with producing and DJing as well as taking care of his own label, Corseque Records. The first Corseque EP called 'Subarctic' received excellent feedback and playtime from artists like Stephanie Sykes, Laurent Garnier, Andreas Tilliander and Inter Gritty when it came out late 2015. In a few months the label's second 12” drops, but you can already hear two of the tracks in this mix.

Patterns of Perception 06 - Andreas Maan

After finishing up their set in Brockwell Park, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, or Mister Saturday Night, travelled a few miles east to Canavan's Peckham Pool Club. This, of course, is the longstanding home of Rhythm Section, a party headed up by Bradley Zero. Rhythm Section is known for its loose, good-time vibes, a feeling that's mirrored in this wild, extended back-to-back session.

Professional lurker of the mighty Cruquisgilde, Micha Lensink, is part of the crew that regularly hosted one of the best and easily the most genuine party venues in Amsterdam in recent years. 

What a place! Sorely missed. 

Rather a Freak than a Follower, (https://soundcloud.com/raftafrec)  is a new Amsterdam based techno label set up by himself in collaboration with Ben Klein, the sound master of the sound system that delivered so many parties. Their first release is solid 3 part EP with nice blend of funk, groove and minimal. Most party goers in Amsterdam have experienced their work directly or indirectly so many times in the last years, so its a pleasure to present Micha's blend on the series.

Why Why [Mix 2016]

As both a DJ and producer, @refracted-music is coming into his own. The past year has seen him release the lush Through the Spirit Realm LP on @silent-season, secure slots on the summer festival circuit and hit the studio to work on a host of new productions, to be released on his own Mind Express label and elsewhere. His career has taken him from his hometown of Majorca to Berlin, a city which has allowed him to pursue music more actively and to carve out a space of his own within the techno scene.

Refracted took the headline shift at the September edition of Patterns of Perception, treating us to three hours of intense, intelligent techno which weaved masterfully between various tones, textures and emotions. To help us relive the night, we are happy to present an hour-long recording of his set.

From his home in the rainforests of Vancouver Island, Canada, @silent-season label head Jamie McCue brings us a mix infused with warm, ethereal textures, spacious dub elements, and insistent rhythms.

Jamie founded Silent Season after moving to the remote woodlands of British Columbia in the mid-2000s. Deeply influenced by the colours, scents and ambience of the environment around him, Jamie’s tastes are reflected in Silent Season’s releases, which include titles from @refracted-music, @yuka, @archivistseattle, @emanuelepertoldi (Shaded Explorer) and @edanticonf.

@janefitz and I really do enjoy doing our B2B sessions. There's a scant amount of planning that goes in to these other than maybe an overarching idea of what we want to start and end with, and maybe a couple Discogs links for reference points mixed in. But that is literally it. We trust each other, and we're confident we can do it, and do it damn well. As always, she's on the audiences' right, I'm on the left, and we go one-for-one the entire time. No escape!!

This recording from October of 2019 at OHM in Berlin is her and I opening the party from zero and doing six hours of tension building hypnotics. Many thanks to the @patternsofperception crew for allowing us to do this, and for letting us use the Rane 2016 even though you've never touched one before.

The mix varies a little more with the speeds and I guess it also got a bit darker and uptempo than my previous recordings. Apparently while recording the mix I’ve been more present at floor 1 and 3 in the IFZ, somehow this got out of my control.

Als eine sehr enge. In Leipzig habe ich lange gelebt und dort u.a. auch mit dem Auflegen angefangen. Generell hat mich die Stadt in meinem Zugang zu elektronischer Musik und Clubkultur deutlich geprägt. Das IFZ ist da auf jeden fall mehr als beispielhaft, jedoch nicht nur als Club-Institution - ich denke da auch an die früheren IFZ-Zeiten, als der ursprüngliche Kern damals illegale Open Airs und Partys in alten Fabriken und anderen abwegigen Orten organisiert hatte. 
 
As a very close one. I lived in Leipzig for quite some time and also started DJing there. In general the city had a very essential imprint on my approach to electronic music and club culture. The IFZ played a big role for me too, however not just as an institution as a club - I’m also thinking back to the early times when the primary collective had been realising many memorable open airs and illegal partys in old fabrics and other abandoned places.
