Remember Chinese Whispers, Stille Post or Rikkinäinen Puhelin? That children’s game, known all over the world, that illustrates the difficulties of transmitting information, but which also reveals the creativity of discontinuous conversation? It feels like the Patterns of Perception and @awalkingcontradiction collectives have been in such a conversation for the past years across a multitude of label nights, private hangouts, and shared festival experiences.

Based in Basel, Switzerland but unhinged from national contexts, A Walking Contradiction is a label for music and research. Curated by @varuna4053, @lemont-eana and Dead Electronic Space Limited (@ltd_dead), the collective share a penchant for beats - broken and straight - yet can't help but churn out music for the quiet hours. A deeply reflective group, you’ll find snippets of their conversations on social, political, economic, and environmental issues hidden in sounds or in plain sight on the sleeves of their records.

Compiled entirely from new and unreleased material, their Patterns of Perception 102 is but the latest product of interlocutions and whispers between Basel, Berlin, Helsinki and the world in general, paying tribute to the significance of community where the legitimacy of commons is increasingly impugned. 
Levitating within a field of sophisticated textures and percussion, this set burns slowly, but with a luminescent intensity. Angular experimental ambience builds into winding, complex rhythms. Inspired minds elevate delicate melancholia into a true sense of hope.

Sure Thing Mix 116: Sa Pa

A lush current of kinetic energy pulsates underneath you, enveloping you until you forget your body has edges. Such is the sensation one gets when listening to our next guest, Sunju Hargun. Based out of Bangkok, he spends his time DJing and co-running the imprint Siamese Twins Records, which is focused on exposing upcoming talent from Asia and acts as a platform for exploring everything from ceremonial chants to Bollywood-inspired acid. 

As a selector and curator, Sunju's inexplicable ability to meld cultures, rhythms, and timbres has earned him a respected reputation at home and abroad. In fact, it was at their gig together in Leipzig at Institut für Zukunft that Unrush founder Mareena and him realized they were both fans of each other. In this spirit of musically-bonded friendships, it was only natural to have him contribute to the series. Let yourself dissipate into the mist with this ambient masterclass from Sunju Hargun.

We have been eager to share this new chapter of our Podcast Series with you for a little while. It comes courtesy of the Basel-based Timnah Sommerfeldt, the empress of all things occult and hypnotic in the realm of electronica 🔮

Part of the well-respected amenthia recordings crew, co-host of Home Radio she runs together with Garçon and a resident at Elysia ~ arguably one of the most loved clubs in Europe ~ Timnah is a well seasoned DJ with strong sensibility in navigating the the deeper, headier waters of techno and atmospheric bass 💫

Timnah’s introspective contribution is a perfectly balanced blend of deep, aqueous drones and murky downtempo carving out and holding space for the patiently emerging stormy rhythms taking the reins for most part in the second half of the mix. Time to brace yourselves for a one way journey into the maelstrom. Safe travels, friends 🌝🌚

I was on 12.30-14.30 on Saturday afternoon. When I started playing, grey hazy clouds were still drifting across the panorama from Friday night’s storm, and by the end of my set, the sun was shining down on all of us.

This set meant a great deal to me, and being gifted the task of drifting from ambient expansion into trippy rhythms, coaxing everyone up off the floor and into movement, was such a dream.

In anticipation of the 2023 edition of the MOSTRA Festival, with whom we joined forces to present you music from some of the most exciting and talented producers and DJs worldwide, in the next couple of weeks, we'll feature several truly outstanding music tales. 

The first mix in our 'Delayed x Mostra' mix series comes from the incredible French producer and DJ based in Germany, Aa Sudd, who has in this past year released two of the most groundbreaking and avant-garde albums of the moment: one with Konduku as Konsudd and another released just a month or so ago on Midgar. 

Aa Sudd's mix is a true masterpiece exploring the dub's hypnotic and atmospheric realms. With intricate and captivating polyrhythms, this mix takes listeners on a psychedelic journey through sound. The various rhythms blend seamlessly, creating a truly otherworldly experience when you listen to it on your headphones.

Aa Sudd will play on the festival's opening day, Thursday, April 6, from 9-11 pm at the Hangar.

The pandemic highlighted the importance of local communities, local institutions and local support for one another. We at Mostra continue the commitment to our Local, not only by programming local artists on the line-up, but also through how we choose our suppliers and other collaborations in the city. And we go further: an exhibitors' Fira for the duration of the festival, generating our own media content during the year through MostRadio, the Mostra’m series of debates, seminars and conferences in parallel with the festival, and our ExtraMostra series of events in venues across Barcelona place Mostra’s roots firmly in their local environment.

Inclusive
Mostra is a festival that reflects on the realities that surround us in electronic music. We are committed to breaking the gender gap in a scene that is traditionally very masculinised. We try to reflect this in our programming, in our team, and in the values we promote: we want a friendly and safe space where there is no room for any kind of violence, and where respect for diversity is fundamental. We have developed our own protocol with a gender perspective, and we seek to raise awareness in a transversal way throughout the project.

Sustainable
Mostra is a festival that seeks to be a social and environmental benchmark through its actions. We follow the most up-to-date sustainable protocols and develop good practice in relation to both city and planet. We have created the role of Sustainability Director who leads and implements an action plan based on sustainable experiences; we limit the programming of artists from overseas to reduce our carbon footprint; and we are committed to contracting and collaborating with social integration and social and solidarity organisations from Barcelona.
