Some time ago I asked Donato to compile the “Rome” edition of the 200th podcast for electronique.it.

His response to this challenge is a techno mix that I can best describe as an intense, intimate and evocative portrait of the reality that is Rome. While drawing on a wide range of source material and inspiration from the past, he constructs a deeply personal mix that is directed towards the future. It is, in a word, epic!

I envisioned a summer festival deep in the mountains on a sunny day, where there is a really nice breeze, then it turns into a beautiful sunset. His performances often last three hours, yet feel like just one track due to their extreme depth, calm restraint, and perfect balance of strength and delicacy. This meticulous Japanese spirit ensures everything is as it should be, earning him the reputation of a "resilient and highly fluid" electronic maestro. Igarashi describes his unique sound as "cosmic drama," blending dense, highly crystallized rhythms with psychedelic tones. His crystalline sound and masterful control over rhythm, with his signature fast-paced arpeggios, stand out on the dance floor, creating a continuous dancing experience.

His productions are meticulously crafted for maximum impact, reflecting a certain Japanese aesthetic. This is showcased brilliantly in a series of EPs on Midgar, Bitta, and The Bunker NY, receiving widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike, and appearing in RA’s top tracks of 2019. Earlier this year, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the renowned London nightclub fabric, Wata Igarashi and DJ Nobu, two Japanese techno giants, were featured together, each presenting their extraordinary talent tracks "Flares" and "泡 (Abuku)."

The first hour of this mix was recorded live at "The Psychedelic Full Circle Hypnose Room Of Ambient Self Actualization" in room 2 of the Objekt b2b Call Super night at E1 on the 17th of November from 2.30 - 3.30am. 

Sadly the E1 manager stopped my set and tried to shut down the ambient room 1 hour in, because he thought the ambient music was "too dangerous" because people were lying down on mattresses, and wanted dance music in that room instead. I managed to get them to allow me to carry on with the ambient music, but they took away all the sofas and mattresses and cleared most people out of the room with torches. Probably the first time in history an ambient set has been shut down for being "too dangerous"... 

Before they did this though, it was a serene and wonderful space which proved you could do something really different and creative in a mega club environment like that. Big ups to the lovely Make Me and Percolate crews for their creativity and hard work in creating this space. They brought in sofas, mattresses, cushions, live analogue visuals, a large golden lamp for the decks, and put the decks on a low table by a sofa (it sure is nice to DJ sitting down). 

It's such a shame that in the end E1's club management didn't understand what we were trying to do and decided to intervene. I wish more venues would take a chance on creating spaces like this. Spaces to listen to music which might not have kick drums, where you can relax and chat to your friends, before returning to dance in the other room. So many London clubs have *no* space to sit down and relax, and it makes nights out very exhausting and claustrophobic. 

Anyways, I re-recorded the last 30 minutes at home, then put it all together, to capture the serene and mystical energy I had been trying to share with people in that lovely space.
