Mysteries of the Deep CXXXVII - Laura BCR

With both her own productions and DJ sets, Laura BCR tends towards immersive, ambient techno terrains – which is exactly what she brings here, curating a blissed-out journey filled with cosmic and hazy sounds. 

In her own words, this is a “drum’n’dub-based atmospheric mix spanning genres between unreleased and fave tracks that I’m playing at the moment.” One to get lost in this summer’s afternoon.

Crack Mix 505: Laura BCR

Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Patterns of Perception 117 - Kaspiann

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

SonarMix 030: Laura BCR

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Hailing from Germany and now based in Portugal, @vril_01 has in recent years been quietly producing and performing some truly extraordinary electronic music. Going from strength to strength, he takes dancefloors on vivid, compelling journeys across Europe and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 121 takes us back to a very special live ambient set .VRIL performed at @nachtdigital MINT 2019, an immersive hour of lucid textures and swelling intensity.

Next up in our mix series is Rotterdam-based producer, DJ and On Board Music founder Laura BCR - a vital presence both behind the decks and behind the scenes of contemporary electronic music. A former record store co-owner (Bass Cadet Records), booking agent, and head of the On Board agency and label, Laura’s dedication runs deep.

In this mix, Laura invites us into her more contemplative soundscapes, guiding us through a true evolving trip of shimmering synths and sun-kissed rhythms. It's deliberate and elegant - a lesson in patience and depth. As deep and mysterious, as it is warm and gracious. The perfect companion to stretched-out summer days, glowing nights or for inner voyages and golden hour reflections alike.

This winter we bring in Farplane, the fusion of Chicago-based DJs sold and Hi-Vis, playing across the spectrum of psychedelic electronic sounds to induct ecstatic trance states. They conduct the deep listening portion of Eris Drew's Motherbeat raves, and co-run their own rave Neon Falls. sold also co-runs the party Relate and works at Gramaphone Records. Hi-Vis operates the mix series Beyond / Below and Jacktone Records' sublabel Dreamtone.

We are honored to celebrate the recent union of these two souls through their collaborative mix, where we are guided through the slow steady coming of a hazy dawn. The arc of ethereal wistful melodies interwoven with pulsating morse code-esque percussion conjure up cinematic moments filled with sentiments of longing, mystery and infinite love.

"Recently I have been enamoured by the work of Donna J. Haraway: a professor, writer and scholar whose work critiques the seprativist perception between humans and non-humans. Imagined as an alternative to the term "Anthropocene", Haraway instead proposes a successive epoch, which she calls the "Chthulucene", wherein multi-species kinship thrives.

Interspersed with samples taken from an interview with Haraway on "For The Wild", one of my favourite podcasts, the mix I have made is a proposed soundtrack for such entangled worlds. It is an ambient deep listening journey that spirals through multiplicities of landscapes, seasons and atmospheres. Many of the tracks that feature in the mix, I listened to over the last year whilst recovering from a physical, chronic illness that was the result of overworking like a machine within our capitalist system. Listening to ambient music and spending time in my small, but wild, garden, played a crucial role in my healing. I strongly believe that a slower, attentive, less extractive pace is what is needed in the route towards climate justice -- and so it was important to me to include many of these tracks in the mix."

Moonbow is the project of London based multidisciplinary artist El Hardwick. Alongside working as a photographer and music video director, their avant-pop music production interweaves a vortex of ambient soundscapes, maximalist sci-fi rhythms and political lyricism. Meanwhile, their colourful DJ sets and mixtapes are an exercise in storytelling that delve into melancholia & euphoria, old & new, organic & synthetic. A refusal to be defined by genre, gender or media underpins Moonbow’s artistic voice, which is at once eclectic and also undeniably their own.

Soon to release their debut album on 33-33’s label, the record will be released alongside a book of prose and collaborative photography created by Hardwick. Titled "8" the project imagines a climate fiction narrative where technocratic powers use the last reserves of energy, on an otherwise resource-depleted-earth, to mass migrate to cyberspace. However, when it is discovered that there is only limited bandwidth and resources to do so, a familiar story of corruption unfolds. Interweaving issues of colonialism, industrialisation, borders, net neutrality, and dogmatic constructs of the “good versus evil narrative”, the story is told from the perspective of several fictional alter egos, who are in a relationship with a capitalist system that favours extraction over nurture.

The beginning of a new psychedelic adventure is rising up from the Mindspring family with Elishman’s full-length album titled, “Internal Unity”.
Elishman, aka Eli Peretz, has crafted a sublime new project of a deeply personal nature, which is rooted in organic, and psychedelic, sounds. The tracks are also teeming with beautiful live instrumentation and moving vocals, perfectly balanced by chilled grooves, as well as sparkling four-to-the-floor Downtempo. Each song is a cathartic release that allows the listener to traverse moods, and feelings, that pertain to periods of Eli's life. Creating music is not only his therapy, but his very way of life. Kudo - Staring Through

@laurabcr picked up her first pair of turntables as a teenager in the south of France. Yet despite collecting music assiduously since childhood, it was only in around 2013 that she began to treat the outside world to her immense skills as a DJ and selector. Having worked as a booking agent, record store owner (Bass Cadet Records, Berlin) and since 2015 head of @on-board-music, her deep and lifelong immersion in music manifests in the supreme depth and breadth of her musical selections, which show influences of jazz, ambient, rock, folk, and of course techno. After several years on the move, Laura has now found herself in Berlin once again - the ideal place from which her skills and sophistication as a DJ can emanate.

We’re very happy to welcome Laura back onto Patterns of Perception. Her transfixing, groove-laden set at our Two Year birthday party in 2018 remains embedded in our memories, and we’re glad to be able to share another side of her distinctive sound.

Drawing on a recent collaboration with Buenos Aires-based video artist Santiago Rojo for NYC-based Public Records TV, entitled Light & Sea, the works that comprise this Patterns of Perception 66 are delicately woven into a contemplative, meditative body of work that explores the concept of travel - a pertinent theme for the restricted, static world we currently find ourselves in.
