Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Patterns of Perception 117 - Kaspiann

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

Patterns of Perception 118 - Faery

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Hailing from Germany and now based in Portugal, @vril_01 has in recent years been quietly producing and performing some truly extraordinary electronic music. Going from strength to strength, he takes dancefloors on vivid, compelling journeys across Europe and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 121 takes us back to a very special live ambient set .VRIL performed at @nachtdigital MINT 2019, an immersive hour of lucid textures and swelling intensity.

2019 Mix: Joe

Norway's Prins Thomas is a giant of an artist whose influence looms large over the whole of the Scandi-scene.  The space-disco king has a sound that draws on electro, krautrock, psychedelia and prog in melodically majestic ways and has given rise to a wealth of fully realised studio albums and classy dance floor singles, mostly on Smalltown Supersound. His latest record, 2019's Ambitions, is one of his best: it found him strip things back and reinvent himself once more over the course of plenty of gently absorbing grooves and mindful moods.

As a DJ he is just as well equipped to take you on real dance floor odysseys built on ever present grooves, but coloured with melodies from the celestial realms. And that is the case on his 90 minute podcast for us, which journeys through frosty northern tundras as well as twinkling night skies with equal elan. The ups and downs along the way are subtle ones, but together they create something perfectly escapist and somehow very suited to this time of year.

This past February, MEMCO and WCBN organized a Black History Month Symposium featuring a panel of three prolific Detroit-based producers, DJs, and activists. During the conversation, each panelist used their own experience to contextualize the emergence of Detroit techno, the music’s DIY ethos, and the ways in which the music inspires their work today. Introductory comments by MEMCO co-president Jordan Stanton ('19-'20).

“Mad” Mike Banks
Mike Banks is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and founding member of the Underground Resistance (UR). He currently lives in Detroit, Michigan and is a former studio musician, having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. He worked in the second half of the 1980s with the collective Members of the House, releasing several 12" singles. In the late '80s he and Jeff Mills formed UR as an uncompromising, independent outlet for music imbued with a critical edge and an often futurist outlook. Together with Mills, Banks built UR into an internationally recognized and respected name. He is also the owner of Submerge Distribution, an independent record label which distributes Detroit-based techno worldwide.

Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale
Stacey “Hotwaxx” is a DJ and producer who has been deeply embedded in Detroit’s dance scene since 1989. She was a mainstay on the radio stations in the mid to late 80s, including WLBS, WHYT, WDRQ and WJLB, and won the Motor City Mix contest 10k prize. Stacey has been featured on numerous Internet radio shows and is currently featured on www.deepspaceradio.com. She currently teaches and designs DJ & production classes with Spin Inc, Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) camp, Give A Beat, Seraphine Collective, and Detroit Students of the Arts (DSA). Hotwaxx also formed a live music group, Nyumba Muziki, which has performed at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, and for the Detroit 300 Conservancy.

Ron Johnson (DJ Jungle 313)
Ron is a native Detroit DJ and educator who recognized a vital need to fill the creative gaps left by the public-school system’s abandonment of an arts curricula. He is committed to empowering disadvantaged youth and at-risk communities with music that inspires. He is the executive director of Spin Inc, a 501(c)(3) organization providing DJ and Music production education for young adults in Detroit. He is also a core organizer of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Camp (DEMC) that takes place during Movement.

Detroit Techno & Resistance: A Black History Month Symposium

Mattikk is a Planet Delsin resident and curator of the new Delsin offshoot label Mantis. The Dutch local always crafts the most interesting sets... always somehow finding the perfect balance between trippy deep broken beats, yet still beautiful, clubby and driving. Glad to share his music on this side of the world.

Animix Eight: Mattikk

It was local word of mouth that elevated Australian @katemiller from local to international notoriety. Her ability to fluidly jump genres and eras always leaves dance floors in a spin, and after emerging in Melbourne she followed the music to Berlin when she eventually became resident at the Oscillate party at ://about blank. Those sets allowed her the freedom to explore and pick up a fan base, and now she is someone who tells long and winding stories, with selections and feelings that define her sets more than tempo or technicality.

The 90 minute session Kate lays down for us is perfectly warm and rhythmic. It's united by rubbery kicks and deep, warm sub bass, but ever changing kick patterns and synths that range from absorbing and ambient to dark and paranoid always keep things moving. It is the sound of a DJ who is always in control, a masterclass in tension and release that means you're always on the edge, excited for what is to come.

Wa Wu We - 108 Dimensions Of Green (Mixed Album)

One of @jossymitsu's skills is her versatility. She was born and raised in Birmingham before moving to London, so has been exposed to, and immersed in, a wide array of scenes. From jungle to 2step, techno to house, rave to leftfield, she has knowledge of it all and never fails to throw it down in electrifying style. Her Rinse FM radio show has proved that over the last few years, and earlier this year the 6 Figure Gang associate made her production debut on Astral Black's Frass FM compilation with the brilliantly bumping 'Whirl.'

That track's cavernous bass and sparse late night atmosphere also characterises this week's mix. It's a selection filled with broken beats and metallic hits that lurch through desolate landscapes. As much as she can nail an absorbing atmosphere, Mitsu also knows just how to raise the levels by banging through flailing jungle, wild rave and blistering techno. But whether the hits are crisp and the kicks taught, swampy synths and low end wobble blast from the speakers or dark and dirty breaks bust out of the mix, this is pure body music that cannot fail to ignite your dancing spirit.

Before COVID 19 dominated our lives it used to be socially acceptable (encouraged?) for a couple hundred people to be sweating on top of each other at 6 a.m on a Salford industrial estate, how times have changed.

At the start of the year after a couple months of touring i felt like i had managed to build up a specific aesthetic with my djing that this club set captured pretty well. Those closing hours of the party are often the ones I feel most comfortable in and The White Hotel is probably the best venue in the country, these factors combined made this show my favorite of 2020 (all 3 months of it) 

We managed to get the first couple hours of my set recorded so here is an excerpt from the evening.

Rough and ready with bags of energy, I hope u enjoy it as much as i did, much love to the stamina cru for staying with me.

Woody92’s (@woodyninetytwo) upbringing in Delft, wedged between the much-larger and musically more iconic cities of Rotterdam and The Hague, gave him  glimpses of psychedelic techno, mystical ambient, free tribal tekno, push-forward goa and psy-trance that influenced his musical development, while also allowing him the space to grow and explore on his own musical terms. Now a respected DJ at home and abroad, his ability to capture an audience while remaining true to his experimental dispositions is unparalleled and unwavering. Meanwhile, his visual art and fashion studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague have sharpened a visual aesthetic that runs in parallel with his musical development, going some way to explaining the rich visual imagery that his musical work is able to generate. 

With residencies at Garage Noord and, before it sadly closed its doors earlier this year, De School, Woody92 has left a deep mark on the Dutch underground scene, thanks to his truly unique syntheses of the meditative, tribal, transcendental, and trippy. All of these influences can be heard (and perhaps – if you close your eyes – seen) in his Patterns of Perception 68, with its deep and glitchy rhythms combining with trippy and more experimental sounds to create a deeply intelligent and intricately arranged selection, bridging textured experimental with propulsive techno, breaks and beyond.
