@ultralowvelocity is a new project formed by French DJs and producers @antoinnnnnnnne and @a_strange_wedding. Revelling in slow-burning and intensely psychedelic rhythms and atmospheres, the duo’s distinctive, shamanistic sound evokes the sensation of time being warped, whilst embracing sudden changes of sounds and feelings, from dynamic to vapourous. 

As individual artists, the two have made their impact on both the French and European stage thanks to creative output on labels such as @worst_rec and @krakzh, as well as their involvement in Saint Etienne’s @positiveeducationfest.
Kicking off their Ultra Low Velocity project in early 2021 with an EP release on Krakzh, the duo have since had a busy post-lockdown period, taking the stage at festivals and parties across France, including at the Visions and Atom Festivals, a Krakzh label night in Rennes, and soon, the upcoming fifth edition of the Positive Education Festival.

For Patterns of Perception 87, Ultra Low Velocity have shared a snapshot of their arresting current hybrid set. Although each of their performances is unique, this recording is a perfect summation of the carefully sculpted, uniquely energetic and kaleidoscopic nature of their sound. Building from a trippy, experimental-leaning start, this set moves confidently through genres, moods and time signatures, reaching its crescendo with free-wheeling, euphoric abandon.

Pianeti Sintetici ('synthetic planets' in Italian) is a new conceptual project
by Davide Perrone (Primal Code) that draws inspiration from the factories
of Magrathea, a planet in Douglas Adams' classic space opera The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where artificial planets are manufactured
on commission.

'This concept has always fascinated me, and I chose the name to frame a
hypothetical future of synthetic worlds, told with sound,' Davide says. 'I
like to imagine the howls of creatures inhabiting solar systems outside our
own. Rarefied atmospheres, alien sequences, and unfamiliar tonal scales.
So, I see Pianeti Sintetici as an open-ended design research project where
I can explore these inspirations.'

"This mix was closing Supercamp festival’s last ever edition, from 6 to 8pm on a sunday. Therefore we thought we do a reverse journey of intensity, starting with 140 pressure taking our time to slow all the way down to 120 during the 2hours - hitting 130 with mellow dub techno cuts or classic-feel ukg, and ending with a series of (very) warm closing tracks upon closing tracks. You’ll know by now that Bambi and Beatrice M. are pretty different in their approach to DJing, which makes it all the more interesting and fun for them to find the lovely middle ground they pleasantly settle in during their b2bs. For several months now, I have been taking the time to explore Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ book Women Who Run with the Wolves. She specifically discusses the notion of Rio Abajo Rio, the River beneath the river, which echoes the depths of the unconscious and the instinctive wisdom that flows within us, even when we are unaware of it. She uses this metaphor to illustrate the primal life force and feminine intuition that exist beneath the surface of our daily lives.
This underground river symbolizes natural instincts, ancestral knowledge, and creativity that continue to flow within us, even when they are sometimes stifled by social or personal pressures. A book that is both inspiring and unsettling, as it deeply resonates with my life’s quest today.

This set is a search for reconnection with Rio Abajo Rio, a journey toward my purest and deepest essence—my inner power—in order to reclaim my intuitive nature.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, this set is woven with Ambient, Techno, Breaks, Abstract, and D’n’B sounds, all tied together by a percussive and organic universe.

"I have been immersed in music since I was a child. My parents were involved in the Hard Rock scene. On my mother’s side, part of my family is from Brittany, so Breton music also played a big role in my childhood.

When I was old enough to go out, I dived into so many different scenes—Tribe, Hardcore, and Trance through Raves and Free Parties, Techno to House, Dubstep to D’n’B through clubs and festivals, Dub, Experimental Music, Noise, Ambient, Punk through alternative spaces and squats. This opened countless doors for me, leading to interconnected musical worlds.

Later, my job at Macadam also broadened my musical perspective, thanks to its artistic direction. That's why I generally need to move between different musical styles. My musical approach is entirely based on my feelings, emotions, moods, and, of course, the connection with the crowd when I play.

This is also why I love b2b sets—they push me out of my comfort zone and allow me to discover even more.

kinetic mix 038: aasana "the river beneath the river"

This contribution is a very special one, as it marks a new chapter in The Observatory’s sound… 

We will always be a home for ambient and experimental sounds. But, moving forward, we will also be exploring our love for dance music, with a particular focus on the deep end.

To begin this new journey and warm things up, we are so happy to welcome back Timnah, who gifts us with a two-hour recording of her set at Omen Wapta, ADE’24. A mind-bending traversal through ambient, drone, and halftime experiments, exploring the liminal spaces between the listening room and the dance floor.

Timnah lives, works and feeds the cats in the Northwestern extremities of Switzerland. Brought up in her parents’ jazz clubs and deeply influenced by her brother’s love for dub and soundsystem culture, she started DJing just after the massively feared Millenium Bug had threatened to offset our relation to time and space. Dedicated to drawing her own map of late 20th century sonic landscapes, she spent the early 2000s exploring 90s electronics including breakbeat, triphop, ambient techno, drum&bass, house and jungle. After a short but sweet excursion into producing in the early 2010s, Timnah dedicated herself fully to spinning the wheels and transversing genres, gravitating towards her current signature sound that spans immersive sound baths and intergalactic carpet rides in half-time. Timnah is a member of Amenthia Recordings and a recent addition to the A Walking Contradiction Collective.
