With purest delight, I'm so excited to welcome Pjenné of Passing Notes Radio & Companion (@companionmelb) for the latest episode in our series. Penny's curatorial expertise and long-standing dedication to the Naarm/Melbourne scene have established her as a pillar of the city's sonic landscape, and both her love of musical discovery and unmistakable influence are felt deeply from afar. 

Pjenné's mix is a enchanting trip through fields of wonder, equal parts honey and gossamer, moving and blissfully sublime. Tender hues paint the air while fervent warmth fills the aching heart. There are few selectors out there with a repertoire as consistently profound as Penny's, and yet one feels we've barely scratched the surface of what's to come. Thank you Penny!

This recording is from the first edition of L’Appuntamento, a series of open-air listening sessions initiated by Villa Lontana Records and Donato Dozzy in Rome. Each gathering pairs a vinyl set by Dozzy with a live electroacoustic performance by a new-generation artist.

In this first edition, held in the garden of Villa Lontana, Donato Dozzy opened the evening with a selection of minimal, folkloric, and acoustic-rooted records — setting the tone for Verde Prato’s live performance.

L’Appuntamento is an ongoing invitation to pause, tune in, and share time through listening.

Steve is a Berlin based DJ who cut his teeth in the house-fuelled backrooms of Canberra, Australia. Since discovering techno in a Sydney warehouse, his passion has taken him first to Helsinki and then onto Berlin where driving, atmospheric soundscapes now dominate his sets.

A founding member of Patterns of Perception, we are proud to have Steve kick off our mix series with an hour of deep techno that strikes the perfect balance between eclecticism and dancefloor functionality.

Patterns of Perception 01 - Steve Duncan

Hysteria (Ray Pham) remains a bit of an enigma. He abandoned the sunshine and beaches of Sydney for the darkness of the Berlin winter, where he found solace amongst the shadows of the clubs and the sounds within. His sets are stacked with deep and driving techno, scattered with dub and house throughout.

He rounds off 2015 with the second mix for Patterns of Perception, with a focus on a driving and energetic sound to help bring in the new year.

Patterns of Perception 02 - Hysteria

We’re happy to uncover this month’s edition of the Patterns of Perception​ mix series. This time, Nali​ has put together an hour of lush, melodic techno and house, bringing back memories of our favourite open air festivals.

Nali hails from Melbourne, Australia and is known for his love of spacious, organic textures. His DJ and live sets see him craft immersive soundscapes that represent maturity and discerning selection far beyond his years.

With a recent release on the Steeplejack​ label and an impressive performance at the Strawberry Fields​ festival, he’s certainly one to keep an eye on.

Patterns of Perception 03 - Nali

For the fourth edition of our mix series, we’ve asked Swedish producer and in-demand DJ Josefine Hellström Hansson to showcase her take on techno and house. The result is an hour long affair of deep and groovy cuts that perfectly blurs the line between the genres. 

Josefine is a classically trained pianist from Malmö, Sweden, who first discovered techno during one of many trips to Berlin. She has since established herself as a staple in her hometown’s major clubs and regularly plays at the famous Culture Box in Copenhagen. Josefine recently released her first solo EP Water Cave on Heartbreak Records, which has already received excellent reviews and playtime from big names like La Fleur and Âme. The title track of the EP is also featured in this mix.

Patterns of Perception 04 - Josefine Hellström Hansson

The fifth Patterns of Perception mix is a deep and driving techno affair by Ascorbite.  

Residing in the south of Sweden, Ascorbite has since his debut release in 2014 kept himself busy with producing and DJing as well as taking care of his own label, Corseque Records. The first Corseque EP called 'Subarctic' received excellent feedback and playtime from artists like Stephanie Sykes, Laurent Garnier, Andreas Tilliander and Inter Gritty when it came out late 2015. In a few months the label's second 12” drops, but you can already hear two of the tracks in this mix.
