The first of a series of mixes that charts the evolution of trance, from it's roots in the early 90s to the world domination of the turn of the century.  This one takes in some KLF tracks from 1988 and 1989.  A very different sound from the sound of modern trance but the building blocks are there - the hypnotic rhythms,  the sweeping synths.

1993 - Harder, Faster

Third in a series of mixes that charts the evolution of trance, from it's roots in the early 90s to the world domination of the turn of the century. This one takes in the sound of 1993 as the trance sound really explodes across the dancefloors of Europe and start to spread round the world.  The German sound continues to dominate and the Goa sound begins to appear as trance goes harder and faster.

The Evolution Of Trance - 1993

1994 - Go Go Goa

Fifth in a series of mixes that charts the evolution of trance, from it's roots in the early 90s to the world domination of the turn of the century. This one takes in the sound of 1994 as the trance sound broadens with the popularity of Progressive sound and the rapid rise of Goa Trance.  This is the year of Paul Oakenfold's Goa Mix when helped push the sound to dancefloors across the world. The German sound was still huge as it went faster with the rise of Hard Trance.

The Evolution Of Trance - 1994

1996 - GB takes control

Seventh in a series of mixes that charts the evolution of trance, from it's roots in the early 90s to the world domination of the turn of the century. This one takes in the sound of 1996 as trance moves into a more progressive direction, led by Chris Cowie's Hook Recordings.  British artists such as John Digweed's Bedrock and Way Out West push this new take on the trance sound.  Ferry Corsten makes his first appearances as Moonman and Discodroids, hinting at the more melodic and uplifting sound that would dominate in coming years.

The mix was recorded live at Cosmopolite Club in Oslo, Norway, as part of the official launch of the Quart Festival. It showcases Paul Oakenfold's eclectic taste in music at the time, as the mix combines drum and bass, progressive house & trance, trance, and goa trance.

As well as being responsible for the best live show I’ve ever seen (Fusions - Trafalgar Square, September 2007), I was reminded of the genius of The Chemical Brothers when I recently went to the London Design Museum to see an exhibition about dance music history and culture. 

The exhibition – Electronic, From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers – inspired me to make a Chemical Brothers tribute mix. Instead of working with the original material (it’s hard to improve on greatness), I went digging for rare or lesser known remixes and ended up with a collection of interpretations from some brilliant producers that hopefully does justice to Ed and Tom’s incredible music.   

As a producer and DJ whose sound, right from the early days, was influenced by the Chemical Brothers, it seemed appropriate to treat this mix like a piece of production work in its own right. Most of the tracks have been edited, reworked, rearranged or, in some cases, have entirely new elements added, such as different basslines, loops or effects. The result is an hour-long techno workout that occasionally crosses over into breaks, electro and progressive house, while keeping true to the spirit of the original versions of the Chemical Brothers’ records.
