Om is believed to be the primordial sound of the universe, the sound from which all other sounds and creations emanate. It is said to contain the essence of all mantras and prayers, making it a powerful tool for meditation and spiritual practice. Chanting Om is thought to align one's body, mind, and spirit with the divine energy of the cosmos, bringing about a sense of peace, harmony, and unity. By meditating on Om, practitioners can tap into this universal energy and experience a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.

Some scholars interpret oṃ to be auṃ, meaning the totality of sound, existence, and consciousness. For others, it represents wholeness, perfection, and the infinite. 

According to the 14th Dalai Lama, OM is "composed of three pure letters, A, U, and M. These symbolise the impure body, speech, and mind of everyday unenlightened life of a practitioner; they also symbolise the pure exalted body, speech and mind of an enlightened Buddha".
