Ed West & Parly B, Dandelion, Jago - Run Fi Cover (Jstar Remix)

Having already released a handful of singles on NICE UP! it seemed like high time for Nottingham's Origin One (aka Kevin Thomson) to step up with his debut album. Written and produced over the space of around 2 years in the artists own Deeper Than Roots studio, the album represents a wider spectrum of roots and reggae influenced music, taking the foundations of this music and applying a modern style and sound to it, traversing dancehall, bashment, grime, jungle and dubstep along the way.

Guest vocalists come thick and fast, kicking off with Russian envoy Tenor Youthman who starts proceedings with the provoking "World Peace", then its onto Doncaster's very own Parly B who serves up his classic "Mi Bredrin" - already a staple in DJ's sets as a single. Next, Bristolian rudeboy Gardna and Congo Natty songstress Nanci Correia bless the bouncing vibes of "Nice & Easy" whilst Manchesters Peppery comes correct on the dancehall rousing "Where You Come From". Hip hop charged ganja anthem "High Grade" single makes an appearance featuring festival fire starter K.O.G. then South London's grime don Irah gets deep on the massive "My Yout", leading into up-and-coming Puerto Rican/Italian dancehall star XL Mad on the tropical leaning "My Gyal A Wine Up". Veteran dancehall MC Spyda (probably known best for his track "Tarantula" with DnB heavyweights Pendulum) steps up the pace on the jungle soaked "Tribute", with another anthemic hook from K.O.G, then its Scottish soundsystem legend Soom T's turn to do her thing on the bumping "Jah Jah". Things get deep and dubwise on the instrumental "Dread and Buried", showing the producers range and depth of production styles, then its over to Hempolics and The Drop frontman Dandelion to wrap things up with his enigmatic vocals on the closer "Trying".

Ambitious without over stretching, fresh and modern whilst showing respect to its elders and showing deepness whilst retaining a popular sensibility, "Deeply Rooted" should take seed in dances, clubs, festival and home hifi's the world over.

Last November, Doncaster dancehall deejay Parly B dropped his acclaimed debut album Lyrics Spree on Scotch Bonnet Records. In 2019, he salutes the UK lyrical foundation that inspired him, on a retool of the title track featuring some venerable special guests. 
Lyrics Spree Veterans cut, finds Parly swapping verses with two of his inspirations: former “World’s Fastest Rapper” Daddy Freddy and UK top ten hit-maker Tippa Irie. The deep tones of Freddy contrast with Tippa’s sweet melodic flow, as all three entertainers fling rapid fire wordage in every direction. 
This new cut is the very definition of a Lyrics Spree - out of control and all over a sound system near you.

Featuring roots reggae veteran El Fata, "Rub A Dub Soldiers" rocks the dancehall hard with a heavy sub bass pushing the devastating digi riddim along like an unstoppable freight train.

Reggae Roast toaster and recent Chase & Status collaborator Natty Campbell steps up for an alternate vocal take also featuring Unit 137 cohort Jago, with an ode to one of their favourite pastimes. Also included is an instrumental version for MCs and vocalists to put their own stamp on - another essential release from NICE UP!

Reggae's African connection meets the global ethos of Glasgow's Scotch Bonnet Records for their historic new EP. French-born, Glasgow-based producer Stalawa has voiced a talented selection of East African vocalists to thrilling effect, over his heftiest roots rub-a-dub rhythms. This project is the culmination of multiple fruitful visits to Kenya and Uganda by Scotch Bonnet proprietors, Mungo’s Hi Fi sound system. It has been fine-tuned between Glasgow and Kampala over the last three years.

The A side features the wailing voice of Ugandan singer and emcee Blessed San. Showcasing a vocal style not unlike legendary Jamaican reggae veteran Michael Prophet (despite never actually having heard him before), Traitor is a mournful rebuke to all who violate his trust. Stalawa has mixed a haunting accompanying dub: all crashing drums and biting horns.

The B side hosts a Kenyan-Caribbean collaboration on a vintage classic. Connoisseurs’ Jamaican singer Delroy Melody has recut his 1979 local hit Ease Up The Pressure, adding verses from Luganda Rasta lyricist C Wyne Nalukalala (meaning “the troublemaker”). The remade backing, based on Dennis Brown’s Easy Take It Easy, was built in Jamaica by renowned drummer Sly Dunbar and keyboardist Dennis ‘Jah D’ Fearon. Also on the flip is Kenya's “first lady” of hip hop and reggae Nazizi. Her song Ukiangalia (“when you see” in Swahili) rides a dubby update of King Tubby’s famous Tempo rhythm.
All vocals bar Mr Melody’s were recorded in Kampala, Uganda by David Cecil and Wana Benjamin of East Africa Records, with brass parts dubbed by Stalawa in Glasgow. The guitar on Traitor is the work of popular Scottish vocalist Tom Spirals. Hornplay comes courtesy of Tim Quicke, Liam Shorthall and Matieusz Sobieski.
