I was experimenting around Lucier's sound degradation technique and was in the process of recording iterations, playing the music from my mobile phone placed inside the piano. But when I left the phone playing the recording of a piano passage and mics inside and closed the lid I suddenly was enchanted by the quiet sound emanating from the inside of piano which felt like it was played by a ghost.

London nightclub fabric and its in-house, artist-led label Houndstooth have released a huge, 111-track compilation of previously unreleased music.  #SaveFabric features tracks from Clams Casino, Skream, Machinedrum, Coldcut, Simian Mobile Disco, Clark, Howie B, µ-Ziq, Terry Francis, Mumdance, Caspa & Rusko, Roman Flügel, Route 94, and many other artists who all donated their music.

On 7th September, fabric’s license was revoked forcing the closure of one of the UK’s most important venues and adding to the 50% of clubs closed in London since 2008.  A court date for Fabric’s appeal hearing has been set for 28th November.  With proceeds going towards their ongoing campaign to re-open, purchasing the #SaveFabric Compilation – which costs just £9.99 – is a chance for fans of music, clubs, culture and nightlife to support fabric and Houndstooth.

Populous is Andrea Mangia, a producer hailing from Lecce, a small city on the heel of Italy's boot. In 2003, he made his first jaunt into the music world with the album Quipo (via Morr Music). In 2005 he released Queue For Love, influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy's Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) and in 2008 he released Drawn in Basic. Both albums were widely received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global music map. He became known for the way he seamlessly blends digital sounds with the analog warmth of soul/hip-hop/whatever else he's influenced by at the time.

Azulejos, his forthcoming release, has a South American tinge to it (and is even partly in Spanish). He moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start work on the album bringing with him only a laptop, a small MIDI keyboard, and a microphone. "Lisbon became both my studio and my muse," he says. He wandered the city collecting field recordings— from trams to people singing on street corners. He sifted through flea markets for records to use for sampling (exclusively Portuguese and South American). Populous describes Lisbon as a city 'halfway between South American soul and European modernity, African in some aspects, and dramatically melancholic." He channeled these poignant fusions into Azulejos, named for the typical tiled facades in Portugal— simultaneously bright and decaying. The album features collaborations with Nina Miranda of Smoke City and Ela Minus, among others. It's a love letter to Lisbon, and a dreamy quilt of sounds he both grew up with and heard for the first time during his influential stay in Portugal.

The Budapest-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Iszlai has put the finishing touches on a collection of exploratory, genre-merging tracks; Jazzamped blends the borders between freeform composition and timeless sample collaging.

Each track merges a bevy of organic, original instrumentation with precision synthesis and imaginative resampling. The underlying ensemble atmosphere across the album ties it together like a film grain on a dramatic vignette, with every texture feeling at once distinct, specific, and homogenous with the culture of tones that surround it. It’s hard to avoid the draw of Iszlai’s arrangements, and it’s even harder to pinpoint any comparisons; each song in tandem betrays a stunning compositional scope, and Jazzamped channels that musicianship into a veritable adventure through Iszlai’s aural imagination.
