This show is dedicated to Cork musician Kieran McFeeley, better known as Simple Kid. We listen to Kierans first band The V Necks, how they got signed to a major label and morphed into a Punk Pop Glam band called The Young Offenders and how Kieran eventually settled on being a solo artist as Simple Kid.

The Band Nuisance is a drama/documentary hybrid, telling the story of the revolutionary period in Cork in the early years of the 20th century, through the prism of musical marching bands in the city at the time, drawing new insights from the intersection of history, music and drama.

The documentary content of the programme features analysis from, among others, John Borgonovo of the School of History at University College Cork, who has written extensively on the subject of band activity during the revolutionary period. The drama content features excerpts from the Frank O’Connor short story ‘The Cornet-Player Who Betrayed Ireland’, which focuses on political rivalries between marching bands, as realised by the Intersections Collective.

The programme also features recordings of The Barrack Street Band playing music popular in the revolutionary period.

Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine) in conversation with Paul McDermott - July 2011.

Willy Vlautin was in Dublin on his way to the Galway Arts Festival to do a reading with Roddy Doyle and play a gig. We had a quick chat about The High Country, the then-upcoming Richmond Fontaine album. The High Country is described as "a song-novel, in which a gripping tale is spun with fully fleshed-out characters, changing scenes, snippets of radio and spoken word passages." The album is a gothic love story, "between a mechanic and an auto parts store counter girl, whose secret love inspires an effort to escape the darkness of the world that surrounds them - drugs, violence, madness, loneliness, and desperation set against a backdrop of endless logging roads and the remains of a forest brutalised by logging."

Willy explained the concept of the record for me: "It is kinda like a concept record, its a linear story about a woman who lives in a small town, is married to a really rough guy and falls in love with another guy. It's very gothic, there's light versus dark, the romantic songs I think are really over-the-top romantic, and then there's a really twisted dark side to the record."

Jude Sherry is the director of the global design agency Anois, which she co-founded with her partner Frank O’Connor to create value through design for sustainability. She is an international expert & thought leader on ecodesign, sustainable design & circular economy. 

In 2021 she received the Irish Tatler Woman of the year award in Art & Design for her leadership in Sustainable & Ethical Design and alongside her partner Frank O’Connor they are on a vital crusade to highlight the amount of Dereliction and Vacancy in our cities, towns and rural areas to bust the many myths around tackling dereliction in a housing emergency.

Episode # 13 - Kieran Hurley (Former UCC98.3FM Manager)

John Hegarty is the director of Fourem Architects who specialise in urban design and the conservation of historic structures and spaces. Through his work he has developed a deep love for the historic architecture of Cork city and this drove John to represent a campaign to oppose the council and OPW planned flood walls along the quays in Cork. 

The campaign argues that these flood walls would drastically change the feel and look of Cork as a heritage port city and greatly diminish the view and connection the island of Cork has with its River Lee. The campaign is called Save Cork City and you will notice the Love the Lee slogan displayed at businesses around the city who support the cause. Save Cork City have been opposing the planned walls for over 5 years now and they propose that building a tidal barrier at Little Island or Tivoli would be a far more economically viable option, cause no interruption to the city centre but also save the original 18 century quay walls. 

We get into the nitty gritty of the issues surrounding Cork city as a marsh and the city's flood defence, but we also talk about dereliction/vacancy, the housing emergency, the Sextant pub and much much more... Enjoy!
