“Just One of Those Things” was originally composed by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical Jubilee. This classic jazz standard was rearranged by Shyvon Siaw for Big Band, beginning with an exciting brass intro and reharmonised chord progressions. The uptempo swing arrangement includes many key changes and a captivating melody that varies across the saxes and brass instruments. Featuring solos on the alto saxophone, trumpet and “trading fours” between piano and drums, this piece creates interest through the exchange of musical ideas that leads into the Arranger’s Chorus and finally returns to the main melody and outro.

Just One of Those Things (Big Band Arrangement)

Another old (unreleased) demo that I made for a past big band arrangement assignment during my undergrad studies, the audio mock-up is kinda crap as I just took it directly from Musescore 3 :D

“It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” is a 1932 jazz standard originally composed by Duke Ellington. It consists of distinct hemiola features, with a fast-paced swing in a standard 32-bar “AABA” form. My arranged version of this song brings in intricate drum parts from John Wasson’s Caravan intro, as well as incorporating newly written Big Band segments to complement the existing song structure. An additional intro segment that was originally composed as part of Sarah Vaughan’s version is also included in this arrangement.
