2014 was a big year for Scott Moncrieff AKA thatmanmonkz. Not only did his own label Shadeleaf become firmly established he dropped brilliantly received releases on both Kolour LTD and here on D.O.G.
Scott has managed to tread that fine line of simultaneously picking up props from all angles and wrecking dancefloors the world over whilst remaining resolutely underground and focused on the more interesting corners of dance music. RA rightly stated that ‘Despite the pivotal part his hometown has played in electronic music history, you can't shake the feeling that if this were the work of some auteur from Detroit, Thatmanmonkz would receive wider recognition from the house community.’ And that is why we love him!
Here on his follow up to last years Don’t Slip EP, he delivers 3 lo-fi, dusty, soul- tinged nuggets which have that unique yet instantly identifiable character only the most talented producers are capable of making. Opener In The Trees featuring the vocals of Kahill Anthony who adds a soulful touch to the raw, bumping groove set up by monkz. The kind of magic track that’ll get lodged in your mind and have the heads clamoring for the info when dropped on a big system. Flip over for Make It Now which treads a more familiar loopy disco path but does so in such fine style that you’ll be coming back to this one time and time again. Finally we have Sad n Blue which drops the deepness with fizzing Detroit padz and killer vox samples giving a nod to the moody one but with a throbbing bassline straight out of the nu school. thatmanmonkz is currently holed up in his studio making tracks for his debut LP which we’re happy to announce will be dropping towards the end of this year here on Delusions.

Dancing has been an intrinsic element of cultural development in every society on Earth, and has existed in multitudinous forms since time immemorial. For many, it is a pure expression of joy, a release of inhibition and a communal act of passion and celebration. For others however, it can induce self-consciousness and social anxiety which, combined with peer pressure or societal expectations, can lead to distress.

Fortunately, there is a solution to this predicament, thanks to the tireless efforts of a Copenhagen based Groove expert in the early 90’s. After extensive studies of dance styles throughout history, Rune Weise Kofoed was able to isolate a dance move which was not only as culturally universal as laughter, but also induced no adverse effects in even the most severe cases of dancer's anxiety. He called this move “Dorsi Plantar”, and it instantly became so popular that it was commonly performed by those who had never heard of it. Its versatility was so great that it was appropriate for every genre of music, and its execution so straightforward and intuitive that it could be achieved by dancers of all ages and skill levels. For all these reasons and more, Dorsi Plantar is now the single most common dance move anywhere in the world, and is generally recognised as being “Perfectly Normal Behavior.”

Following the success of this dance revolution, Rune has gone on to create a musical movement of the same name. Like the dance move, this music has been developed through an exhaustive search of historical material, which had been carefully recorded onto vinyl for posterity. These records were collected and combined under the name Dorsi Plantar to create a new rhythmic creation with the same universal appeal and ease of enjoyment which made his infamous move such a huge success. Now, for the first time, Kyoku Records have been given the opportunity to present Dorsi Plantar’s phenomenal creations as a collectible vinyl pressing, featuring an exclusive remix by Paxton Fettel. @Monologues Records is a record label founded by Ben Gomori in January of 2015 and has evolved from what was initially a podcast series. Although the mixes are still coming with relative frequency, so are the records. The first seventeen releases were digital only but like many others before him, Gomori has decided to start releasing on wax and the last seven records from artists such as Nail and Leon Revol have been pressed to vinyl. The eighth 12" release from Monologues features a four track EP from DJ Aakmael with two of those being remixes, one from Ben Gomori himself and the other coming from none other than the man behind the imprint's previous release.

@LeonidMusique has had several releases come out in fairly quick succession this year with EPs on Secret Reels, Future Disco, and of course Monologues. The young producer is somewhat of an unheralded wunderkind flying under the radar with lovely sample work and moody textures found throughout most of his work thus far. In today's premiere he takes the already fantastic track Dahlin' from DJ Aakmael and gives it his own spin. Making do without the vocal chops of the original he takes the main chord samples and works around those. Leon's version is a lot darker and hazier, less upbeat and yet still very groovy. Detroit-inspired organ stabs adorn this slow burner while a hypnotic bass line walks around the arrangement. This is just further proof that Leon Revol should be on your radar if he isn't already.

Veteran NYC producer and DFA regular @the-juan-maclean hops on the RNT wagon for a rolling EP of drum-machine driven grooves for the Reserve sub-imprint. The record starts with the peak-time stomper Fine Time, building exquisite tension and release through looped and filtered samples, and then moves on to the boogie-infused swing of Don’t Stop For Nothing. Everybody Clap leads off side B with a soulful and string-laden vocal over a bouncing hi-hat-focused house arrangement, and the EP closes out on the dubbier tip with the eponymous Panic In Fort Greene Park, a synthy and smooth slow burner. All around beautifully produced and eminently playable, Señor MacLean has made himself a most welcome addition to the Razor-N-Tape family with this dynamic EP.
