Grace in the wind:
    
a mother pulls up roots,
takes petal, sprout,
fruit and leaf to keep
a child from hunger;
  
weaves no bright flowers
in her hair 
though they grow  
everywhere.

She imagined a day
I’d have
an acre of my own 
      
to plant, to tend 
and harvest.
     
I’d want a taste
of what she knew:
woodland, pasture,
field and meadow.

Bred in the bone,
an appetite for comfort
    
drifting through our home.

How did I not notice
glories going by,
blossoms tossed 
into heaps of weeds?

What to keep?
What to shed ?
Heirloom?  Foraged?
     
Down rows, through
vines and brambles,

my mother knew:

take only what you need.

There was a time,
chamomile mowed down,
a breeze light
with its scent.

My mother, too,
was once
young and tender.
