Well... there hasn't been much time for music these last few weeks, what with Mom's situation, The Sheckies Tour, King's Upper Respiratory Woes,etc... Hope to Jam again soon...but the last PBK Jam yielded a few gems: "Ashes to Ashes" from last month...and with the limited time I've had lately ("a half hour here...an hour there...") I've managed to put together this cute little number. It's the Classic PBK lineup, with additional instruments and vocals added by me. My apologies to Mr. Simon....and Mr. Young...

A Philmore King version of the Sgt. Pepper classic. We took a slightly different take on this one while still remaining faithful to the original. Please listen to this ( and everything else we do for that matter ) on something other than built in laptop speakers! Decent speakers and Headphones in particular for this one are highly recommended.

A tune from the first Sir Paul solo album is the first" Full PBK Lineup" multitrack Apple GarageBand effort. Bobbo`s back!( on bass ), and the original guitar,bass,vocal and Kings` drum tracks were recorded "Live"in the basement at Philmore EHT, and additional instruments and voices were added later in the living room by Philmore

A little ditty that King & I put together in the last few weeks. I recorded a "Demo" using drum loops and a click track, and had King record real drums in the basement, then I did the rest upstairs in the living room.

A choral suite using the text of 20th-century astronomer and science popularizer, Carl Sagan.  

There are three movements: 

Mvt. 1 is about discovery ("Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known"), 

Mvt. 2 is about beauty ("The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together).

Mvt. 3 is about space at large ("If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.")

On a personal level, Carl Sagan has taught me how beautiful science and the universe can be, and that understanding something enriches the experience, but doesn't take away from the mystery that draws us to the big questions of life.  He taught me that the sciences are beautiful; the natural world is elegant; and for such small creatures as we, the vastness is bearable only through love :)

Cosmos

 Well....uh, what was I going to say?...Oh yeah, here`s one of my original tunes. King and I first recorded basic drum and guitar tracks about a year ago. Recently I had PBK`s Bobbo, on the Bass Guitar, along with a special guest appearance by Larry Larrabee, Master of the Blues Harp, over for a living room session, with me adding electric guitars and mixing it all together over the last few days. The vocal track is in fact, the "scratch" vocal.... a track recorded to give the musicians an idea of what the basic melody and verse/chorus structure of the tune will be, a sort of "reference" vocal track, which is usually re-recorded later...it`s "raw" but seems to work, so with an "okey dokey" from the rest of the boys I went with it.  The subject of the song is of course...particularly to most of us "Boomers"... self explanatory.

This is an experiment. I'm interested in perhaps -- perhaps! -- beginning a podcast project, in which I'd read selections from this blog on a semi-regular basis. For now, in order to avoid podcast "episodes" that last only four or five minutes, I'm thinking about grouping posts together that follow a certain theme. For example, I might find three or four recent pieces about technology, and record those as a single episode. 

Here is my first highly experimental stab at this idea. I've chosen three recent posts about my struggles with the Western Canon, and with keeping up with culture generally, and it turns about to be about 25 minutes long. 

I have a lot more thinking and tinkering to do. For example, what's the best way to record blockquotes? In this, I try out the idea of slightly altering the quality of the sound when I'm quoting from another writer, adding a little reverb and panning to one side or the other. I dunno, we'll see. 

So give it a listen, if you're inclined. And I'll keep working on what this should actually be, and whether it should be at all.
