this is is super clean. It still has the very jazzy feel as always - you and your half step guitar playing ;) - But I like how this one is just... more open. It has a cleaner feel. I love the little synth melody about 2:15. And the outtro is super sick.

In this track I set out to try and blend keys, or make a song that is atonal.  The following is how I attempted this.  The song starts by cycling back and forth between two guitar progressions:  Cadd12 - G - Am - Em  and  D - Dsus4 - Cmaj7add11 - C.  They are both technically in C Major, but I used two different scales to play lead over them, so they sound like they are kind of in different keys.  I believe the the two scales were E and D Harmonic Minor.  I don't remember for sure though.  They sound like they are almost competing though.  There is the vague sense of two different keys cycling back and forth.

The first real modulation comes at 1:04 where we cross firmly into the key of D Minor using a new chord progression (this is a good example of how the chord progression and not the lead really controls the key of a song.)  This new progression is Dm - Bb - C - Am - Em and it cycles with another progression Dm - Bb - C - F.  This is also around the time the lead seems to speed up and which I think is actually in E Harmonic Minor.  I wish I could remember for sure, but it is part of the reason it sounds kind of tinny and a little off key, but in a cool sort of way.  It is off-key.  The rhythm and lead are a step apart, I'm pretty sure.  I think part of the reason it might sound cool and actually work is that the E Harmonic Minor and D Harmonic Minor scales were competing from progression to progression earlier in the song, so there is already this blend of E and D going on.  Maybe?

Towards the end of the build up I suddenly switch mid-solo into the Pentatonic scale to finish it up, which you can kind of pick up if you listen closely, it happens around 1:40.  But you'll also hear the key change back to C Major at the same time, which is probably what really stands out.  I use a new progression for this ( C - Cadd9 - D - Dsus4 - E) which I play four times while finishing up the big build-up.  The Pentatonic scale is in E Minor, I think.  Again, I'm not sure and if I take the time to pick up my guitar and figure it out, I'll edit it into here, some day I will, maybe later tonight.  Anyhow, the song builds up into the big release where I repeat a riff from the Pentatonic scale (from my favorite pattern actually) three times and hit the synths hard and then after that it's back to the same progression that started the song (Cadd12 - G - Am - Em) and we sail on out using the relaxing synths from the beginning of the song.  It is a really nice release.
