Mikael Lind - Unsettled Beings - Old Tales of Folly (Time Released Sound)

Pop-Ambient from Uruguay. Following two tape releases (one of them on British Touch Rec.) Gastón Arévalo is releasing his debut CD „Rollin Ballads“ via Oktaf Records. Growing up close to the harbour of Montevideo, Uruguay´s capital, being surrounded by old architecture, fishermen, boats and the sea on the one hand and subtropical nature on the other, his fascination with his natural and urban surroundings seems to have developed only naturally. His earliest acoustic childhood impressions and associations from this surroundings are still his most vivid – for example the sounds of the textile factory, which used to be his father´s workplace. His latest recordings are intensely inspired by natural and organic sounds – tracks like „Selvagem“ are the result of field recordings of long walks at sun dawn mixed with unconventional sounds of natural elements such as stones and bones. The result is a synaesthetic impression of foggy, far away landscapes; yet still flooded with light. This is what Arévalo intends with his aurally and ,visually‘ stunning tracks. „Souvenir“, „Rollin Ballad I“ or „Geographia II“ let the listener loose himself in the never ending repetitions evoking those images. 
Classically trained, Arévalo intersperses analogue sounds into his tracks as he incorporates modulated and modified fragments and passages played by instruments. This evokes the musical influence of Soundconnoisseurs such as Brian Eno, Terry Riley, Arvo Pärt or Erik Satie. 
As a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on experimental ambient music, this record based on neo-classical sound collages and modulated and synthesized field recordings rife with hidden melodies and abstract sound structures. His tracks are and should be mirror images of life – „Rollin Ballads“ – which, as life is, are always moving and constantly changing.

The title of Mikael Lind's latest album, Unsettled Beings, is a reference to his restless self. After completing his 2012 album, Felines Everywhere, in the spring, by fall he had already written a couple of new songs, and on his Iceland Airwaves gig in November that year he performed nothing but new material. Constantly trying to develop his sound, Mikael makes sure that his followers never hear the same concert twice. The material he played at Airwaves last year constitutes the backbone of the album which is now being released.

Mikael is Swedish, but has lived and worked in Iceland since 2006. The interesting thing about his new release, is that all the people involved in realizing the music are also foreigners living in Iceland. Paul Evans from Greenhouse Studios played the violin and also mixed the album. Ryan Karazija, who is doing very well in Iceland with his band Low Roar, lent his vocals to four of the tracks. Alex Somers from Riceboy Sleeps, producer of several important new musical acts in Iceland, mastered the album.

The basic idea of the album is a core of several different pianos accompanied by a lush pattern of violins. The pianos are of varying character, and their melodies often intertwine in a poly-rhythmic fashion, giving the listener the option of letting different melodies compete for attention. Ryan's vocals add warmth to the songs, ornamented with Paul's violins - sometimes in a call-response aesthetics.

The album is being released by the San Francisco label Time Released Sound by the end of August. Time Released Sound is well known for the ambitious artwork of its founder Colin Herrick, who recently went to Iceland especially to work on the artwork for Mikael's new release.

Jasper TX, known to his friends as Dag Rosenqvist, is a busy man indeed. Besides being one half of the rather amazing post-rock duo De La Mancha, he has released a number of carefully drafted and very well received solo recordings in his Jasper TX guise over the last few years, with labels such as Miasmah, Kning Disk and Lampse.


The visual aspects of Rosenqvist’s music cannot be neglected. Feelings superimposed on feelings; he works his music like a painter, applying layer after layer of colors to his compositions. In these deeply cinematic, drone based pop workings, the guitar is the most commonly featured instrument. It is however not always recognizable as such – his soundscapes could often be anything but. The sound is altered, by gentle hands, until it gets under your skin, into your soul and further.


»Singing Stones« is the fifth album proper from Jasper TX. Over almost 60 minutes, we are told a heartfelt story of windswept islands in past times, a small community surrounded by the dark sea. It’s a story of sadness, of being left behind, a story shrouded in darkness and death, but not without a glimpse of light – in hope of a possible reunion.


This is a personal album, allowing us a glimpse not only of Dag Rosenquist’s unique musical skills, but also his inner life, his beliefs and his compassion. And by echoing our not so distant history, with »Singing Stones« he actually manages to teach us all a little bit about ourselves.
