Return To Dust - Road to Burning Man 2017

The last mix of 2017 and the first mix of 2018 was this 4.5 hr DJ set I played at Galeria PATIO, a speakeasy in Oaxaca for New Years Eve. Upon our arrival to soundcheck from Mexico City to Oaxaca at 8pm on New Years Eve 2017, we were greeted by a small girl whose dad worked at the venue and was helping the staff put together the last touches in the space. She was a beautiful positive omen, as she showed me the way to the DJ booth and upon my first mix, standing next to me uttered the words of excitement “dale, dale!” (do it, do it!). 

I knew it was going to be a night to remember, so I decided to field-record a poet by the Santo Domingo plaza who became my opening intro, setting the mood of the evening, and as the night progressed, “dale, dale” became the mantra that matched the amazing energy of the crowd! 

Enjoy this 4.5 hr-musical journey I shared with a full house at Galeria PATIO, in Oaxaca on the first dawn of 2018!

"I am from Caracas, Venezuela; and in so many of all the history of all the Latin American countries I have visited so far (Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile) I have seen the negative, lasting cultural impact of the Spaniard colonization to the indigenous people of all those places. Venezuela is no different, and since the Spanish dialogue at the end says: 

"The Incas had an extensive knowledge in Astronomy, Medicine, Mathematics, among many other things. But the Spaniard invaders had the gun powder... I wonder how America (the continent) would be today, if things had been different..." 

I have decided, that the name for my mix is: "Guaicaipuro" @illich-mujica 

P.S. Guaicaipuro [guʌʒkʌʒ'puro](c. 1530–1568)was a native (indigenous) Venezuelan chief of both the Teques and Caracas tribes. Guaicaipuro formed a powerful coalition of different tribes which he led during part of the 16th century against the Spanish conquest of Venezuelan territory in the central region of the country, specially in the Caracas valley."

Dersu, a designer by trade, possesses the uncanny ability to convert visual design elements into conscientiously composed sonic spaces that you can all-but see. Peace in Noise sets celebrate Kenny and Dersu as individuals. However, the way they work as a combined unit merges their unique personalities and tastes into a unified audio aesthetic that no one else can replicate. There is a palpable, intimate brotherhood present in the music they mix together and it is such a pleasure to experience.
